motorguide Xi5 interferences - 10/06/17 05:28 PM

Yesterday anchored on the bubbles at GV my Xi5 started acting crazy. Head was flopping side to side and twisting up. It only happened when a wide body jet was coming over to land at DFW. I would have to unplug power and restart everything after the plane was gone. Anchor would hold spot if a small MD80 size came over but as soon a heavy came over it would go berserk again. Went to other end of lake away from the flight pattern and re calibrated the compass and no more problems as long as I stayed away from the airplane flight pattern.
So, today I called Motorguide and they had never heard of such a problem but had heard of big Navy ships causing interference offshore.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced interference of any sort.

Wow. That would suck. Never heard of that before.

Thanks for the call. I had never heard of the issue until hearing from you. I had Lowrance and MotorGuide at one point all linked together and fish GV often. I have had planes fly over where you could almost see the pilots and I never had any issue as you are having. I know have Humminbird and Minn Kota and have not yet experienced such issues on them either. Not sure what is going on.....I have many customers with MotorGuide and they to fish GV with no reported issues.

Forgive me: How long have you had the set up? Did this issue just start last Saturday? Have you been on GV before without any issues?

I think I've had it on GV 4 times now. This was the first time it ever acted up. I got it from you about 6 to 8 weeks ago. Don't remember the exact date. I did register it online so warranty should be in effect.

You did do all the proper calibration steps correct?

I must have since it worked perfect the first 3 times on the water.
I even went to the other end of the lake away from the flight path and re calibrated it and tried it again and it worked perfect. Also tried it again out of water after I got home and it appeared to work correctly sitting on the trailer.

Mine did something similar. I ended up getting everything but the shaft and the prop replaced by MG before it finally stopped.

I would bet that the plane interrupted the gps signal much like if you were under a bridge.

I have been under a bridge before with anchor mode on and everything was fine until I finally lost the gps signal. The Xi5 went bat s--- crazy (turning side to side at full power) because it was trying to find the signal (as explained by a MG tech).

My old Xi5 did this a couple times in open water and each time I could see a plane overhead.

Update:
Earlier this week on RayBob the TM worked as it should. Held anchor perfectly. Not only did it hold my boat but a friend came by in his boat and while tied together it held both boats on spot with a pretty stiff wind. I guess 80 lb is enough.
