On one hand, I'd love to take the moral high ground and complain about the blatant solicitation, or go all self-righteous on you and tell you how us serious fishermen don't need our intelligence insulted by such a calendar.

On the other hand, most of the things I'd like to say about the calendar wouldn't be too appropriate on a family-oriented forum such as this

Put together a calendar with some Texas girls, then maybe we'll talk. LOL

Arlene -

Some people take their fishing too seriously and don't think their sport should "bare such demeanor." I, for one, can appreciate the fact that many people from all walks of life enjoy the sport of fishing. It appears the fish don't mind, either.

Beautiful touch to the sport if you ask me. I'm jealous because you all get to experience so much more of the fishing world than I am able to right now. I'm glad that you're all fulfilling your dreams.

Thanks John...but I'm in British Columbia and don't make it down to Texas very often. I'd like to see Texas someday though. I live on Vancouver Island..in a fishing community. It's great living right on the water. A lot of folks are catching some pretty small pinks here at the moment. And the pinks are fussy. Seems they'll only go for flies and they gotta be pink flies!

Nice Eye-Candy but I for one would like it better if you used some actual girls/ladies/women who do fish and are actually involved in promoting the sport. We have quite a few down here in Texas that say a lot for the sport.

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 09/21/02 09:06 PM

Hi Andy..I'm curious to know why it is that so many people think we don't fish. In fact we do fish and that's exactly what my calendar is about. Not only that..30% of the profits from my calendar go directly to fish enhancement programs. Do you know anyone else who is doing that? Is that not promoting fishing? Without fish enhancement support there will be no fish for anyone to catch. Does that not make sense? My husband owns a wilderness fly-out fishing lodge. Where in there, are there no girls who fish? You tell me!

One other thing that I believe is important to mention...is the fact that all of the clients who visit my husband's lodge are from the U.S. and they would be very upset if there were no more fish to catch. Are you not concerned about the possibility of having no fish to catch? I think the sport of fishing has a bleak future if all people do is say that promoting the sport takes priority over enhancement issues!

If your main goal was the advancement of fishing, wouldnt the profit percentage advanced to that cause be slightly more then 30%

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 09/21/02 09:39 PM

No Hooker..it wouldn't. In order to do next years calendar without sponsors we need to be able to pay for it all ourselves. Not only that..we have expenses for this year. If it was just a girly calendar I would just say all profits go to me..and we would bare our breasts..but we aren't doing that. Of course I'm sure if you know anything about what things cost these days...you wouldn't need to ask that question. When you start giving up every penny you make at your endevours and give it all to charity...then you can bash. Until then...and until you can figure out a way to live off the land and are doing it yourself...I'd say you're a bit out of line!

Arlene, that's a beautiful site you have set up, I hope you get to donate a lot of money to fish enhancement programs Now, how can we help you become a better angler? Or better yet, how can you help us become better anglers ??

Seriously though, I don't think anyone minds you peddling your calendar, I think most of us here just prefer a more subtle approach; i.e. contribute something to the forum, ask sincere questions, then, I think everyone on here will be much more open to your entrepreneurial efforts. Plenty of guides list their phone numbers and emails, and let us know what, if any dates they have open, but they also contribute fishing reports, and answer questions honestly and freely. Those guides get my business.

Don't take it personally, we're just gun-shy about seemingly thinly-veiled marketing attempts. Time will tell...

My .02 and good luck,
James

Arlene,
Hard to get a word in edgewise.

John and I fish together a lot. He got to go today and I was doing some work on the house with the wife. We have an older home built in 1924 and since it has cooled off a little, we're working on the outside of it now.

I do make a trip once a year up north to muskie fish but have never been to Alaska or Costa Rica, two places I want to fish before I check out of this world.

You're located in a great fishing area. I use to salmon fish Lake Michigan when I lived closer there but right now it's striped bass and freshwater redfish. Just miss my muskie fishing a lot, that's all.

Well Redfin...I do a lot of rainbow trout fishing..and I go for Coho (silvers) and Pinks. A few weeks ago I got my limit on native rainbows and smoked them in cherry wood. Though I'm a salmon lover...nothing can beat rainbows. I don't know much about fishing down your way. I am interested to know why so many people like to go for Dolphin (at least in florida). That bothers me for some reason!

Arlene

It's not that I think you don't or you personally aren't promoting fishing. It's just that there are a lot of women that do fish and and are nice to look at. To be honest I place more importance on their performance then I do on their looks. I would rather see their pictures and stories rather than a bunch of models. Take a look at Debra Hengst if you wanna see the complete package. She is just one of many who get out there and not only talk the talk but walk the walk.
Posted By: girlsgofishing

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 09/21/02 10:32 PM

The performance of the models will be evident in the calendar itself. As far as the fish stories aspect and information about conservation, that too will be in the calendar. A lot of work is going into that aspect. I'm not soliciting for hot models...the ones I have are not all on the website either. You are way ahead of yourself. So I suppose to be authentic you need to walk and talk a certain way...is that it? Strangle philosophy...maybe more bent on bragging than fishing. I understand the need to brag..but I don't understand the need to cut someone down who doesn't walk or talk a certain way. Sorry I don't concur! And that mentality escapes me!

IN TODAY'S SOCIETY WHAT ARLENE IS PROMOTING IS SO MINOR I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ANY ONE WOULD BE OFFENED. SHOOT, JUST GO TO ANY MALL AND YOU'LL SEE MORE SKIN AND ETC THAN ALL OF HER GIRL'S PUT TOGETHER. AND AS FOR AS HER MAKING A PROFIT, WHO EVER SAID SHE HAD TO DONATE ANY MONEY AT ALL. 30% OF SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN 100% OF NOTHING. HECK EVERYONE THINK'S SO HIGHLY OF THE UNITED WAY, THEIR LOCAL TARRANT COUNTY PRES. MAKE'S $ 195,000 PER YEAR AND THIS IS A NON PROFIT CHARITY. SOUND'S LIKE IT'S CHARITY FOR THE BOSS. ARLENE IT DOES'NT MATTER WHAT YOU DO,YOU WILL ALWAY'S HAVE CRITIC'S. YOU HAVE HANDLED YOUR SELF VERY WELL SO FAR SO HANG IN THEIR AND GOOD LUCK. THIS IS 2002 I THINK IT'S TIME TO LIGHTEN UP AND PUT MORE OF ALL OF THIS NEGATIVE ENERGY TO WORK ON A GOOD CAUSE. MOST OF THE PEOPLE THAT SEE THIS ARE GOING TO SAY DANG IT WHY DID'NT I THINK OF THAT. GOOD LUCK ARLENE AND DON'T BE A STRANGER.

Arlene,

Mahi-mahi (dolphin), I guess they're so prolific. Personally, I prefer deep fried striper and white bass with smoked salmon a close second. We use to smoke our Lake Michigan salmon (coho and kings) with apple wood. I do love halibut when prepared on the charcoal grill, though. A friend of mine gave me about 40 pounds of halibut when he got back from a fishing trip out your way and it was delicious!

Yes..but what does Dolphin taste like? And what about the sentient being aspect? I dunno...over here we love dolphins like pets. I could never eat one. They're so smart too! Honestly...I was shocked to learn that dolphin fishing is such a big sport when all the while tuna fishermen are moving mountains not to catch them in their nets. What's up with that? Just asking btw..not trying to start an arguement.

Arlene,

The dolphin you are talking about is kin to a porpoise...this is not the same thing as the dolphin people fish for. Have you heard of mahi-mahi? That is really the dolphin that is fished for and it has a wonderful taste. Don't worry, it's not the one you're thinking of. Mahi-mahi have green/blue/yellow color markings and a very large dorsal fin. They have a head and face much akin to a bulldog and are very good fighters.

Ok Redfin I thought it must be a different variation of the species...cuz I couldn't see anyone fishing for flipper...if you know what I mean! See over here all I have to contend with are fish that don't haul me over the side of the boat. Well that's not entirely true..we do have some big fish here too. It's pretty clear to me though that you have quite the variety over there. I actually never thought of fishing for the things you do. I'm wondering about the flavor. I'm curious! Maybe I'll get a chance to try it sometime!

First off when I saw this thread posted last evening I was relucant to reply, but secondly a BIG HATS off to Andys reply - you definately hit the nail on the head with your reply and I "Thank you". Arlene, my only gripe with what you are promoting is that I myself and a lot of women that I know are desperatly trying to stay in this sport called "fishing" and some pursue it as a career and calendars such as what you are promoting just make us look like some "sexy babes" and "bimbos" that don't know one end of the rod from the other, or can drive a boat or launch and load the boat or locate the fish. You yourself said that these where models and I seriously doubt if any of these girls could withstand the rigors of day in and out that most "professional women anglers" go through. I'm not wanting to turn this into a gripe session with you but I just had to come forward and speak my mind. I wish you well with your endeavors with your company, but I will have to look the other way to the "true sportswoman" thats not afraid to look good and get her hand dirty. Hmmmm, I feel the need to redeem myself.

My comments about the calendar were tongue-in-cheek, not intended to be insulting. Unfortunately my fingers don't always translate my sarcasm as well as my mouth does.

I must certainly say that I am impressed Arlene's stuck around, most people who pop in to sell something have a career of precisely one post.

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 09/22/02 02:37 AM

Hello Debra.

~~ I'm wondering why it is that a woman must feel it is necessary to "not sell calendars". Or if it is ok to sell calendars, why she would feel it isn't ok to be a woman selling calendars of women looking good fishing? I'm just trying to understand here...why it is that it is ok for you to look good fishing (as one member here stated you're the real deal. And he wouldn't know that unless you'd shown him pictures of you looking good ..right?); and it's ok for you to take photos of yourself looking good fishing? You can post them wherever you want and that's ok. And I can do what you say is ok to do? And you say such calendars are bad. Hmmm interesting logic you have there. I guess you might be mad that someone would go so far as to use this to sell calendars and give 30% to a cause you love huh?

Your reference to women who aren't afraid to get dirty is very interesting, as well.I'm assuming you are saying that it is only you who is not afraid to get dirty? You knew by looking at my website how dirty these girls hands were? You've been there and seen it yourself? No you haven't have you?...quick to judge aren't you? Either that or you are extremely psychic and just know everything about these girls huh? You're pretty good!

Arlene,

Personally, I like the site. But then I have a libido.

The fact that your calender doesn't show a boy scouts fishing calendar. Doesn't show the elderly fishing calender. Doesn't show the pysically challenged calender just showS us what it is.

I admire you if indeed you give 30% for the sport you love. You have a lucky husband. You enjoy his love for the outdoors.

Let's just call a spade a spade. When someone go's to your site the first thing that pops up is well...the bikini. [Not a bad looking woman also I must say.]

Yes, I will succumb to yearning for the visuals that only my ancestors the neanderthal's can relate to. But then who am I to judge?

That's OK, Arlene, a grain of salt goes a long way on this site sometimes.

I'm 56 and my wife is 57. She has the hands of a carpenter (has too with the old house we're trying to maintain). Her hobby is hula and middle-eastern belly dance and she's very good at it. Most girls 18-25 would kill to have her figure when they get to be her age. And, yes, she has a great personality to go with it and does fish sometimes. She participates in many of her dance troupe's "professional shows" and I enjoy watching them once in awhile when I can.

I learned to control my libido many, many years ago, LA. I think it comes with maturity.

Arlene, first of all let me say that I admire your ability to maintain your cool with all these statements. It's just that you are the first to bring a subject up on this board that is, well not exactly what of these hairly legged rednecks are accustomed to. I think you have taken them all by suprise and they are dumb struck. They are really a bunch of great guys and girls. I have had some of your "models" as customers in my guide service and have found out not to be quick to judge. They may wear their strings, have their nails done, even have on toe rings, but when they are ready to fish, they get down right nasty. To be fair though, some are real ding bats. I have learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover, or a person by how they look. These good old boys would rather see some of your models catching some of our big bass, crappie or strippers. They aren't sure what kind of fish you have up there. You probably wouldn't have had the clamor if you had your girls posing in a NASCAR setting. It's just that fishing down here is sacred ground and anything new is scarey. Sound like you are trying to get a new business off the ground, go for it. Have fun doing it and keep your cool. GO GAL.

Thanks Micheal...I understand the sacred ground thing and all. You want to talk about sacred ground? There's a residential subdivion just up the beach from my cottage and they've been digging like mad to put the area on city sewer and get rid of all the overlapping septic fields. Suddenly a worker came across some old bones and artifacts. Turns out it belongs to the natives. Oh oh..sacred burial ground. All operations have to stop now and the natives are staking claim on the area. More of Canada is going to the natives. Have you heard about that over there? How our government has been handing over land, left, right, and center?
Now there are natives praying all over the place!

Southern influence would be great, but it would be a little out of line for me to email her.

Arlene. Yes do the calander, send your donation, support what you and the rest of us love. Email me when their out. Jeez I dont think their is anyone on this site that dont have a calender somewhere in there day. And personally while I'm at work sweating my tail off I would much rather look at something other than my old boss. Good luck and hope you can make it to Texas and enjoy some southern hospitality, but obviously you will have to just see a few of us. Ignore the putdowns because it is simply to each his/her own. If you don't like the calender then shut up complaing and do what Arlene is doing and make one that satisfies you. Geez people all you need is a computer and a calender kit from Office Depot. Go Arlene and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arlene, for whatever it's worth, ahng in there. I always harbor a particular appreciation for folks who can make a go of things on their own in a very challenging economic climate; I envy you for your ability to do so. And, as a person who has collected his fair share of Hooters calendars over the years, I really can't argue with the calendar's subject matter. Liek someone else said, it's a calendar, and only a calendar, and I need a new one.

Why is there no 2003 calendar? Or did I just not find it?

Please, keep your chin up, and best of luck to you and your husband; the world could use some more successful entrepreneurs, and I know a LOT who have failed.

Thanks DH..there isn't a 2003 because this is a brand new project. Most 2003 calendars are already sitting on the shelves.

Great, thanks. I have a couple of cals for 2003, but I thought this would be a great addition!

Let us know when you have the calendars. I am sure you could sell quite a few on here. I would by one. My 2 favorite things is fishing and women, and you just combined it. Although women will be off, since I have found one to hold on too.

I'm taking the girls out fishing on the Quintsum River on Friday. We're going for coho. You're allowed to take 6 jacks from the river too, so that'll be good.

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 10/16/02 07:52 PM

What kind of boat do you fish out of? Also, since I've never fished for salmon, what type of tackle do you use for that? I guess it takes a pretty big rig - that is, I'm assuming they're pretty big fish? Heck, the only salmon I've ever seen is in a restaurant, on my plate, and blackened! But good luck.

Re: Girls Go Fishin' 2004 Calendar - 10/16/02 08:05 PM

No we're going out on the river for coho. No boat required. Just hip waders! We're going to try fly rods with 7 or 8 weight reel and a fast sink line. We're going to try some wolled muddler (either brown with a gold body, or grey with a silver body). I'm hearing that peopel are scooping them out of the river in bucketfulls at the moment.

Arlene,

Congrats! I just read your last months postings, I laughed my tail off. I am curious to know how sales of the Calender are, have they gone up in the Texas Market? I only have compliments for the initative taken, and I am glad some of our southern gentleman anglers did want to talk to you about fishing. I also have recieved a great email or two from Rangerkev, this guy is pretty sharp.

Personally I have not pulled up the Calendar but from the sound of the post's it was a lot milder than the some of the email I unwantingly recieve. I personally support all business women, especially those who have the mind to find something they love to do and make money at it and donate back to support the sport, is just that much more admirable. As far as men wanting to take us seriously, I have found that most men these days are in support of Lady Anglers, maybe cause times are a changin or maybe because they get to fish and eat well on the boat.....and satify their visual libidos.
I think it all is just fun!!! and funny!!!
If you scroll down we also have some pretty sharp women on here on the Lady Anglers site and personally I think it could use some more frequency. (It should be moved up from the bottom of the bait bucket).
Why don't you take a look and let me know what you think.
