Transducer cable repair?

Can a transducer cable that was burned in half be repaired or spliced back together successfully? Had a fire near my boat last year and the transducer cable that ran to my trolling motor melted and burned in one spot. Transducer itself shows no evidence of melt or damage. Is this something a repair service ( in the DFW, Tyler, or Waco area) can fix for me or should I just bite the bullet and spend the 200 bucks on a new transducer? It's a Humminbird 998c Si Combo.

It can be repaired. I've done it before. If it is part that will be in the water you need to carefully heat shrink and I use dielectric grease inside the heatshrink. Solder and heatshrink individual wires and replace the shielding. You can add a little aluminum foil if needed. Don't untwist any twisted wire pairs any more than necessary. It is not that difficult to do you self, I'm not sure if a shop would do it or not.

If the repaired portion will be in the water, you will be at risk of causing further damage to the unit if water enters the repaired area. Best to purchase a new transducer if it is below the water-line.

I've done it a couple of times. Cut the bad spot out. Drop a piece of heatshrink that's long enough to cover the patch, and small enough to shrink tightly, over one end of the cable. Separate each small wire and peel the insulator back on all the individual wires. Try not to tear up the tinfoil that's wrapped around the wires...you'll need to re-wrap the wires when your done. I used a Weller soldering iron made for small electronics and rosin-core .032 diameter solder to mend the wires. The wires are color coded so just twist the like colors together and solder them. Its harder than it sounds. Be sure to solder the ground wire too. Wrap the individual wires with a small piece of electrical tape and re-wrap the foil around the wires. Center the heatshrink over the splice and use a lighter or other open flame on the heatshrink. I've never tried doing this on a broken wire that's below the waterline so maybe shut-up-and- fish may have a point??

I did what Red House did about three years ago. Only thing I did different was to put heat shrink on all the individual wires and then over the whole cluster. Mine actually is underwater and I've had no issues. Shut up could be right about possible damage if water gets in. IDK. Probably not worth the risk if underwater.
