Use surge protectors ! - 07/09/18 10:46 PM

We had a storm yesterday and lights went crazy flashing on and off for a second or two. It cratered my block the phone charger cord plugs into in the shop so I went in the house and got another and plugged it in. Walked behind boat and checked to see if new starting battery I’d just put in earlier that day was charged up yet. One bank on each 2 bank charger was red, saying check connections. Fuses were blown so I had to wait till this morning to hunt them down, drove all over as they weren’t stocked in auto parts stores. Both blew soon as installed, not plugged in just from battery. One side of each charger is toast. Minnkota tech said not repairable so I’m out 2 new ones. I asked if surge protectors would harm chargers and he said no. I’d have thought fuses would stop damage but I’ll have one on the new ones. I even double checked wiring on new battery but it’s good. The wires to each post are tied with wire ties so basically like one for each side. And it charged for hrs. before storm hit. Just a heads up as I’d never had this happen. May be a common thing but hopefully this saves one of you from losing one.

I would double check your ground rod connection to your electrical panel and make sure you have a good, tight connection.
