Depth Finder and Voltage Question

Depth Finder and Voltage Question - 05/21/18 06:19 PM

I'm having a problem with my depth finder shutting off. Previously, it would shut down if the transducer was plugged in. The Garmin Support guys said to check my power supply so I checked it on my front mount (trolling motor battery) and same thing. They replaced the unit and it started off working briefly, then it started to do the same thing. Enough of the backstory.

Every now and then the unit will shut down when I start the big motor. It's like a surge or drop in power. If the power is coming off of the fuse block, shouldn't that be coming from the starting battery and not the alternator on the motor?

would the voltage on the starting battery change when the motor is cranked?

It should be wired directly back to your battery instead of the fuse block. You should adjust the size of the wiring according to the length of wire needed. Anytime that you run it directly to something like a factory fuse block you are at the mercy of whatever wiring job that someone at the factory put in as well as what is between that fuse block and the battery that could interfere. You also don't know the condition of the wires at this point and they could have some damage to them that is causing the issue.

You should have your battery checked and see if it is still working at optimal performance. It is possible that it could be your battery getting weak.

It's not that bad of a job. get a fishing tape from home depot and carefully work it thru from the transom with a string attached. An hour of running cable and you'll be back on the water.

I had the exact same issue before with the unit shutting down randomly. I was using the fuse block as well. I had to run the wires to the battery itself and this went away. Good luck

When buying wire to use in graph power supply, make SURE to buy the tinned copper wire for marine use. Regular automotive wire EILL. Corrode internallyun 1-3 yrs. issue raises its ugly head again.,
