WOW!!! Another PB Largemouth on the Fly - 09/16/17 05:46 PM
They opened Buescher State Park back up this week so I decided to head out there with the kayak. When I was launching the kayak another fisherman was trying to catch a bass that he had just missed a bite on. So when I launched I threw the popper dropper in that area and caught a 1.5 lb. bass. I continued working my way down the bank with the popper dropper for about 15 minutes but didn't get a bite so I changed over to fishing for sunfish. I tried a Llano bug, a couple different colored briminators and a rubber legged dragon in all my favorite spots but only caught 2 small bluegill.
While I was sitting there I saw a small bass come up after a dragon fly in deeper water. So I threw the rubber legged dragon over to the spot for a couple casts with no luck. I grabbed the 8 weight with the popper dropper rig and on my second cast something grabbed the dropper and started pulling. At first I thought it was the small bass I saw. Then it made the first run and I thought it was like a 3 or 4 pounder so I was still tying to muscle her a bit on the 6 lb. fluorocarbon. But then she made the 3rd run and there was no mistaking she was bigger. She took me on a ride in the kayak. She finally tired and I lifted her in the boat. When I stuck my fly on the end of the rod and tightened it up to put it away the dropper broke off. One more run and I would have lost her.
I had her officially measured and weighed for a Buescher State Park record. She was 23.5 inches and weighed 7 lbs.
Oh, and the fly was a magical clouser j_hirn.
PS: Robert, I know that it takes far more skill to catch a 4 ounce bass in 2200 cfs of flowing water than a 7 lb. bass in still water but these guys seem to like the pictures. They even congratulate me, go figure.
