New PB Largemouth on the Fly

New PB Largemouth on the Fly - 09/10/17 03:31 AM

We received about 15 inches of rain from Harvey. All the creeks are a mess, Somerville is 16 ft above normal and Buescher is closed temporarily. So I decided to hit the ponds to catch some bass and crappie. I spent a couple days catching a bunch of small bass and some big crappie. A couple of the crappie going in the 14 inch range.

I went back this evening and fished for about an hour throwing a popper dropper on my 8 weight but all I caught were a few bluegill, a small bass and a crappie. So I switched over to the 4 weight to catch crappie and caught this 6 lb. 9 ounce / 22.5 inch largemouth.

Yes sir, not a bad fight. I was using a lightweight rod with 5 lb. line so I had to be careful. She made a couple runs and dragged my kayak about 15 yards. Then she buried herself in the vegetation. I got her out of the vegetation and she made a 3rd very short run and completely gave up.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments and congrats

Robert, They have completely closed down the spillway to fisherman. I'm not sure we will get to fish there anytime soon.

That's a great big bass on a 4 wt J-Moe. And the crappie are really nice too. It's nice to see a warm water report.

What did you catch the bass on? I've been catching a lot of bass on poppers lately, but they have all been 8 - 13 inches. All my ponds are in public parks and the bigger ones have gotten pretty lure wise,

Thanks Krawlin and j-hirn2

I caught it on a Moe-Beta. The little jig fly below but with a Chartruese collar. I roll cast it with the 4 weight and drag it slowly through the top of the underwater vegetation. I can really feel the bite well with my 4 weight.

I had some suspicions that my scale was reading consistently low. I had caught several 9.5 inch sunfish that I was sure weighed in the 3/4 lb. range that showed less than 1/2 lb. on my scale. When I had the bass from Buescher officially weighed I found it was reading 9 ounces low. This bass was likely over 7 lbs. Ugh, another lesson learned. Going to get me a new scale this week. And remember to check it periodically. I threw back a 9.5 inch rock bass a few weeks back that my scale showed was just short of a state record. bang
