"Gold Tiger" Rod?

"Gold Tiger" Rod? - 08/24/02 09:07 PM

Anybody have any info on a "Gold Tiger" rod?

It has a cigar band looking sticker with a Tiger head in the center. The words "Gold Tiger" above the head and three feathers below the head. The tiger head, words, and feathers are in gold color on a red background. Immediately above the sticker is what looks to be a cursive "R". There are no other markings on the rod. There is a section that fits into the base with two end sections that seem to have different "actions". There is also another section that could only fit into the base section with heavier duty line guides and tip. All are 33 inches in length.

As you can tell I don't know squat about fly fishing tackle shocked Acquired the rod after a relative's death. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey rrhyne56!

I believe its bamboo.

It is in a balsawood case and based on the tackle with it, ("Yamatoyo Fishing Gut Works" line, "Maruto" snelled hooks), I am assuming that it is of Japanese origin.

Thanks!

Looks like the monetary value is minimal http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/Forum4/HTML/000283.html
but that does not mean that it could not be enjoyed as a fly rod.

Here is another link you might find of interest www.caneflyrod.com

rrhyne56,

Thank you so much for your help in answering my question and also the links you have provided!
Unselfish efforts such as yours to educate and inform is just one of the reasons that this is such a great website!
Even though the monetary value of the rod is minimal it is priceless to me as it came from my namesake.
I knew he liked to fish but was never aware of his flyfishing pursuits. He was usually too busy providing for his family that he had very little time for his own recreation. I can now take this rod and further pursue his intentions.

Thanks again,
Robert

Robert

Glad that I could assist. The value that the rod has for you is understandable. There are indeed things far more powerful and valuable than the dollar.

To get on a soapbox, I have found flyfishing to be a wonderful pasttime. It is relaxing to me to cast and retrieve the fly, to take in the outdoors and all of nature. Tying has also become quite a passion. There is no thrill like catching a fish on a fly that one's own hands tied.

If you ever have any fly fishing questions please feel free to post.

Best
