I might consider amazon or BPS/Academy and purchase a package with rod, reel and line if I were you something in a 5wt. Starting out is very inexpensive if you let it be. I’ve fly fished for 40yrs with some very simple gear and still have caught plenty and had a great time. Yes, I own some nicer stuff I’ve accumulated over the years, but cut my teeth on gear that can now all be purchased ready to fish for +/- $50 and far better than I had. Just my opinion.

Here is an example of a starter kit that gets you on the water, which is the best way to get started. Go fishing with it and have a good time. There is better for sale for sure, but very few actually realize the value until lots of time learning how to use the equipment first.

Check Amazon or Ebay for some inexpensive rod/reel/line combos. There are many available at very reasonable prices.

Lots of fly fishing forums in Colorado with a lot of stuff for sale. I recently bought a rod that had never been used off of a forum there.

I've never been a big fan of the combo packs. They have to go cheap somewhere to keep the price down. Almost always it is the fly line that is sacrificed, and IMO, that is the single most important component of your fly fishing rig. Below is a complete outfit on amazon for under $150. I personally own and have used everything below except for the rod. It is all good equipment. Not necessarily the best, but good quality, and not much of a dropoff in quality from stuff that cost 4-5x as much.

You'll invariably want to widen your fly selection, but this will definitely get you started. The black wooly bugger is among the most versatile flies you can tie, and can catch almost any species of fish on any body of water in Texas. Tight lines.

Maximumcatch Rod - $50

Fiblink reel - $23

Piscifun Sword Fly Line - $32

5 pack leaders - $14

0x-3x Tippet spools - $12

Dozen black wooly buggers - $9

I second the Amazon suggestions. Piscifun and MaxCatch are two prominent brands on there that come to mind that make good quality products, from rods to reels to line etc.

I’ve had good luck so far with Piscifun Sword fly line on a couple of my rods, and the Piscifun Sword reel is good quality CNC aluminum reel. Many of the rods on there look very nice for little money, graphite blanks, cork handle, burl wood reel seat.

The brands available on Amazon are much better quality and cheaper than the house brands and off brand stuff sold in retail stores.
