Red Ear on Popper - 05/18/20 06:30 AM

The popper was working before the rains hit yesterday on Ray Roberts. My personal best red ear. What are y’all having luck with so far?

Good looking fish. When I target the pan fish with a fly rod, I almost exclusively use poppers on a 4wt.

Nice fish. I use a Llano bug popper with a briminator dropper. It's awesome for searching them out. Size 8 popper with size 10 dropper. Wacky worms, rubber legged dragons, prince nymphs and Betts fancy poppers are all in my sunfish fly boxes.

I’ve only recently started seriously fly fishing but I have had plenty of hours on black and brown woolly buggers so far. Next time I’m in a store that sells flies, In planning on picking up some poppers to try out. What color poppers would you recommend and is there a certain technique to use them? I’ve never had any before.

I like yellow the best. For the most part sunfish need much less action than bass do. I usually throw it out, let the ripples move away from it, then twitch it and pause, Then maybe 2 or 3 short strips. If I'm not getting strikes I'll try more violent strips and pops.
