Banner day in the Keys

Banner day in the Keys - 07/12/18 11:27 PM

Had a day for the books with Capt. Shane Smith out of Sugarloaf Key today. We hooked eleven Tarpon and boated six before noon. Shane is an outright first rate guide and an all round dude. We got into a serious outbreak of shrimp on the surface and the Tarpon were going nuts. Got plenty of footage for a good video. I still can't feel my arm.

That looks like an amazing trip. I have got to get down there at some point. . The second to last picture in particular is great, too.

Personally, i think we would be better off heading to South Texas - cheeper trip, more days of fishing and probably catch more fish, but thats just me. Still, its going to take me a LONG time to get the images of those Tarpon sucking down a fly and launching out of the water...

I would just enjoy the opportunity to catch huge minnows in 6 feet of water instead of 20 or 30. Big fish in a small water makes me tick. I don’t understand it, that’s just me. We can go to south Texas also. Might as well do both!

sure do miss chasing Tarpon in skinny water, spent five years living in the everglades and really is one of the best fisheries. My youngest son and myself best day was 21 jumps and 14 fish to the boat. One might fish other places in the lower 48, but the chance to hook a stunning variety is unmatched in the keys. I lived in the valley/ south Texas for 20 years and yes there Tarpon in the lower portion of Texas, but the number of days available in a year to actively hook them is far greater in the keys. The roadside fishing can be year round, with little to effort. If one dreams of hooking Tarpon on fly, just drive HWY 41 or Route 1 when it is a bit warmer. It is one for a bucket list.

I have never caught a Tarpon in Texas. As a kid we lived in Harlingen. My dad and i spent many days chasing Redfish and still do to this day. I just spent a week at Port Mansfield in June. I have thought about yrying for a Tarpon down there but its always to windy to run out to the end of the jetties in my jon boat.

Beautiful fish. Looks like a blast. I have to get to the keys someday. Searched local waters for Tarpon a couple of times fly rod in hand, but haven’t seen any to cast at. Did jump two and land one here on my baitcasting rig chunking plugs. Most explosive fish I’ve ever hooked, gave me a big case of buck fever both times. Tarpon are definitely in a special fish.

Those are the perfect size tarpon. Lots of fun to catch, but don't totally wear you out. Congrats on a great day!

You me and Jesse10 need to, at least, hit the carp flats before the season is over. Then we can talk about more exotic destinations.
