Fly Suggestions for Late March in Broken Bow

Thinking about heading up there near the end of the month and would like to catch a few trout and maybe a walleye or two. Any must-bring fly assortments I should know about?

Might be A few March Brown’s left I would be caring some in mergers and dries in that pattern and olive and tan hares ears 16–20. If running a nymph rig with an indicator I would follow it with an 18–20 rainbow warrior or zebra midge. An egg pattern followed by any small nymph or midge might still be effective. Hope you do well Hopefully everybody will be burned out from spring break I just hope for your sake that some of them did not have a cooler with 200 fish when they left.

Gonna be interesting, good luck, hopefully the water clears up, attractor patterns, eggs, San juans, followed by a zebra midge or wooly bugger are good choices for warm water species clousers or jig flies will be key........be aware of the consumption advisory placed on the lake and river if you decide to keep fish.

Be careful. The water is dirty right now and instead of the flow being around 100 cfs it’s around 400 cfs. Also heard they were not going to stock again until the flow valve is fixed and the release rate is back to normal. Right now I would be using a sinking line or leader while swinging a streamer or bugger.

Thanks for the info everyone! I haven't fished anywhere in Oklahoma yet...is there another place within about a 3 hour drive from Fort Worth that I should be looking at besides Broken Bow? I'm open to suggestions.

The Blue was fishing great today

To 1960Texan (or anyone interested): As of the middle of last week the high flow conditions of the LMF from below the Spillway to above the generation plant (like, eg. The Evening Hole) was, at least for the moment, over. Peter, a guide out of the Fly Shop was reporting that the flow was as low as he had ever seen it. Evidently (I always lose track of what's supposed to have been going on), there's some repair being executed at the Spillway. From Peter's info, the repair was scheduled to be finished by after this weekend. Then the plan was to resume flow of 140 fps. This is pretty ideal for that section of the river, so I hope that's what actually happens.

If all that happens, then all advice about how to best fish 450 fps is out the window. In that case I would go back to the standard stuff for this time of year, march browns, emergers and dries, caddis, emergers and dries, midges, and all the standard nymphs. During the high flow I fished leech-type streamers behind a sinking leader and did pretty well. I would go another way at this time.

There's probably better/further updating as to the flows than I've just provided as mine's several days old. Maybe GolferJeff has found out more. He usually has good sources.

Thanks jonbo for the update! Looks like I'll have to put Oklahoma on the back burner for now and stick to Texas waters for the next few months.

I'll be headed up there in mid April for three days. Going to be fishing mid week so the crowds hopefully won't be too bad. I'll post back after the trip to update people on the water conditions and what the fish are biting (assuming we get some to bite).
