want to target carp but want to add bait - 03/09/18 01:22 PM

Checked out a small local lake yesterday, and lots of dead carp on the bank...maybe left by guys fishing for other species. I want to catch some on a fly rod, but I don't see any, and my belief is you need to sight fish. So I'm thinking about the idea of trailing a "boilie" off the back of the fly...probably trai
l some stiff mono when I tie the flies so I can thread the corn on with then take it back through the eye. Yeah, I have to work out if I can cast without losing it. Anyone ever tried this? Just not confident with just a fly. Thanks.

Slow, open loops. Yeah, it might take some practice.

Here's a cool site on carp fly fishing by TFF and TFR alumnus longhaireddave

Got a CGR fiberglass and I cast pretty slow and a little sidearm...somehow, I think they call that Swedish. Thinking dried Garbonzo beads drilled through and dipped wet in strawberry jello powder. Just any bait is gonna give me more patience...thanks. Heck...maybe just gummies on the hook

Kaboom, what kind of carp are they? Commons and grass can look similar but behave and react to flies very differently.

There is such thing as a corn fly that mimics a kernel of corn and is very easy to tie.

In addition to the great resource posted above, I learned an immense amount from the website FlyCarpin that made me a much better carp angler.

It's pretty much dead now, but it's a treasure trove of knowledge regarding techniques and flies for carp.

With that said, Carp fishing is damn hard. They are finicky and spooky fish that don't always react in consistent or logical ways. It doesn't matter how you're doing it, there are no short cuts. Days when I can land one fish are a remarkable success. Be patient and don't be afraid to change things up until you figure out the right pattern.

Seems like carp bait would be really hard to "throw" w/fly rod...but worth a try. In addition to above suggestions, you might consider this, especially if grass carp are present:

Gives off a nice smell fish like.

I don't think you need to add bait to your fly. I have a good friend who has become somewhat of an expert on catching carp on the fly. If he is not seeing any carp moving in an area, sometimes he will chum the water with a can of corn or even catfish food pellets and wait for a while 'til they show up. Then he can start tossing his fly.
