Boat capsized on Ray Roberts

Boat capsized on Ray Roberts - 07/03/17 03:27 AM

Scary deal on Roberts today ... as we came around Cates Point and swung to the north, I noticed a dark colored Mako center console anchored about 100 yards from shore. Something didn't look right so we headed that way and saw the back right corner of the boat was sitting low. Within 5-10 seconds the back half of the boat was swamped and right as we tried to throw the guy a rope it capsized in a big hurry. Luckily he was OK but all we could do was drag the boat closer to shore and give him a ride to the marina. Unfortunately his wallet, phone and keys all went down with the boat.

He said all it took was about three waves over the stern. Wind was 15, max.

I only share this to say, a lot can go wrong in a hurry when you anchor off the stern ... y'all be careful out there ...

Awesome job my friend! He's very fortunate you were in the area & noticed something wasn't right.. If it weren't for you being so observant, he could have lost more than his keys, wallet & phone....

+1 for the awesome job. The guy could learn a lot by taking the Coast Guard boating course.

Sure does not surprise me. I almost never go out on Possum Kingdom lake on the 4th weekend due to the crazy boaters. However, we had some guests out and They wanted to fish badly, so I took them out into the NO WAKE ZONE in Neely Slough. I tied up at a favorite shady dock and they started catching some dink crappie and sand bass when some guy in a wake boat blasted out of the no wake area at high speed. He kicked up five big wakes that crashed over the front of my boat and swamped us. I flipped on the bilge pump but my boat sat outside all day yesterday drying out. Thanks to the foam in my boat we did not sink. If someone was fishing in a jon boat or a boat without foam down you'd go.

The day is coming when we are going to have to have a boaters license just like a drivers license. There will be boat lanes for over 5 mph travel and "lake cops" to enforce. It's only a matter of time and people are going to bring this on themselves.

Sunk a old Hyrdrasport back in 92 at RR. coming out of buck, we speared a couple of waves and then it was everything we could do to get it to the shore line.

Sat our there for a couple of hours holding it upright to keep it from rolling over.
Got it floating again and got it to the ramp without only 3 holes knocked in it from the rocks

First wave is a warning.....Second wave, you better be moving....Third wave too late!

RR is the very reason I sold my last boat and got a bigger one. Got caught back under 922 bridge when the wind got up and trying to get back to Jordan had rollers coming over the bow. Little 50 merc on 17.5 bass tracker didn't have enough giddyup.

As for wake board boats and lake fleas sooner or later they will have to do something about the problems they cause. Maybe confined to a specific area of the lake. Come out of that area and you lose/forfeit the boat/ski just like cars in a drug bust. Our lakes and waters are there for all to safely enjoy and should not be compromised by a few idiots.

+2, basic boating 101 states that you anchor off the bow and the stern. Hope that guy learned a lesson before he gets his boat back on the water. I see people anchor from the stern on Fork in the winter. Sometimes I am tempted to say something but you never know how people will react. My fishing buddy will tell you that I am not bashful. I tell people all the time to turn their headlights off on the ramp. Some snicker and others just say "never thought about it". I feel like telling the ones that snicker that they really don't want a lower unit in their radiator.

Hard way to learn that lesson on anchoring. Glad you were there to help though.

Yeah I'm not one to kick a guy when he's down but this guy was alone, no free life jacket (my son said it was snapped to his leaning post) and anchored backwards. I will say, he was a younger guy in good shape and I'm sure could have swam to shore without too much trouble.

Boating 101 or not, I never double anchor or anchor off the stern if there is any rough water or not. If I get hit by a wave at the stern I want it to float with the wave, not take on water. We have boats on Lake Travis that can throw a 2-3 ft wake and idiots driving them who don't mind doing it.

Good job being alert Steve. Sorry to hear about the waves PK, that is the reason I don't like going out on weekends. I remember that big boat that was going slow when it passed us last time we were out and how quickly those waves got to be a pretty good size. Glad I did not see what would happen to my small bass boat if that boat had really been moving.

Wake boats need to be banned. Any boat whose design criteria is to make a huge wake is too dangerous to be on a public lake. If one of those boats passes by people in a jon boat down they will go. You recreation cannot include drowning your neighbors and sinking boats.

Been catching some crappie on PK next to docks.

is mako cc not self bailing? I guess because it was tied front and back it couldn't handle the water?

So what happens if it flips upside down?

Wake boats make bigger wakes than other boats? I did not know that.
