Visiting Sheppard AFB from Alaksa - 02/21/16 01:10 AM

My name is Chris, I'm coming to TX tomorrow through March 2nd. Looking to hook up with someone who has an extra kayak in the Wichita Falls area and wants to do some fishin or just from shore. I've been fishing out of a yak for quite a while so I won't slow you down and I brought all my own gear. I did a little research and the word is the blue catfish and stripers are active in Lake Texoma. ..would love to try that out!

Let me know if you have any pointers and/or want to hook up.

You won't have to travel as far as Texoma, unless you really want to. You could rent a canoe or yak from the base MWR outdoor rec folks. Lake Arrowhead has decent white bass population and plenty of catfish just south of Wichita Falls with shore fishing from the park area and along the rip-rap (just check Google maps). Fish the lights after nightfall with a white curly tail grub or 2-3 inch jerkbait also in white or flat silver. About an hour to the east is Amon G Carter lake with decent bass and crappie but its not shore fishable. Start asking/dropping hints about fishing and you'll find somebody.

If it were a different weekend I could take you to the Brazos River at the hwy 16 bridge below Possum Kingdom Lake. It is about 1 hour south of WF. A kayak is best but shore fishing works if you have waders. Get in at the bridge; go upstream. There is a concrete boat ramp at th bridge for loading and unloading. Striper, white bass, black bass, and the occasional smallmouth bass frequent the area. There are probably catfish in there, but I have never tried for them. It is really scenic too (for Texas.) It would give you the best oportunity for many different fish. Fish texas rigged flukes (white and chartreuse), 3/8 oz road runners, slabs (by the dam), spinnerbaits, and jig n craw. Good luck.

Black bass have been slow in the local area lakes but should start picking up soon. Arrowhead is still pretty muddy from the fill up as well as Amon Carter. White bass should be picking up soon on both lakes. I have heard Catfish are good on Arrowhead but I don't usually go after them. Unfortunately I have a full boat this weekend with two of my sons in town otherwise I'd offer to take you out. I'm planning on going to Lake Bridgeport this weekend which is about 30 minutes past (south) of Amon Carter near the town of Chico. I hear they are biting there. I work at Sheppard if you want to meet up and I'll show some places to try. PM me if you want to meet up.

When you get to Sheppard, go by the MWR and chech out the Annex on Texoma, part of MWR.

I used to love MWR and all the fishing, camping and other gear they had available to rent for service members.
Get everything you can from them. They will hook you up!

You can fish from shore you are just limited due to private land in places. Selma park is open plus you have access to the new side and the tunnel area near the old dam through hwy 1125. If you are kayaking Jacksboro lakes might be a good option. Small easy to access

k. That's what I was wondering. The shore didn't look brushy but googlemap showed a lot of houses and private docks. Thanks.
