Anyone ever fished up here? Making a trip up there in early July. I hear the trout fishing is excellent. Any tips for catching browns and rainbows? Having grown up in Texas I'm pretty clueless on trout.

I have fished it. An UL spin rod/reel 4# line and black jigs, brown jigs, olive jigs. From the marina run up river and on the first big bend fish the left side where the creek comes in. Good spot. I would even try pistol pete's same colors or rooster tail spinners black. Use a swivel and add a leader for spinners.

I have been going to Lake Tanneycomo 4 times a year for over 20 years to visit my cousins that live on the lake. I have caught so many double digit brown trout out of that lake its crazy. We broke the code for catching big brown trout years ago. Find the warm water creeks or pockets of warm water that flow into the cold flowing current of the lake. Forget the little lures for these big boys. Its 20lb line and big lures, big rods. The brown trout run up into the warm water to feed on the perch and hang out in the cold water and make a quick foray into the warm water to feed on the perch. I use the Castaic perch and rainbow trout baits and sometimes a size 13 jointed Rapala in a trout and perch pattern. Roark creek, Bee creek, coon creek, and turkey creeks are best for me. I never go past bee creek. Key to catching the big boys is the power plant from Table Rock (MUST) be generating electricity. The fish go into feeding frenzy. Find out the generation schedule and head upriver to meet the flow and float down river hit all the creeks mouths. Good luck

Also make sure you have barbless hooks for the first 4-5 miles of the river and no soft plastics. Excellent fishery.

went one time. Rented a boat. pretty little river (lake). Very very clear. We could see trout on the bottom in 10 foot of water. Couldn't get any of em to bite. No clue what to do! Good luck!

I rent a small pontoon, I like it. The UL spin and a 3wt fly rod is what I use for all trout, although the biggest I have caught is 24". I guess I tend to catch lots of smaller trout, same at Taneycomo. But 4-5# trout is fine on that light gear and a lot of fun. I use barbless hooks, I don't care if I lose a few. The San Juan river is a slouch I guess compared to Taneycomo. I do have a friend that caught a 30# brown on Cebolla creek in the Jemez of all places, so it does happen, just never to me .. yet. I am going to up size baits in the future at Taneycomo. wink

Good luck, great place.
