man that was really impressive
have you seen the other pelicans that come in?
they look like a true pelican & were at 1 point almost extinct
they are growing every year now

today was probably the most impressive display of nature i have ever seen

American white pelicans. They overwinter along the coast and on some inland lakes and breed in prairie pot holes (small natural lakes). They are pretty common in overwintering and breeding range and are locally common in between during migration. The birds you saw are making their way back to upper Midwest. They are pretty amazing.

The brown pelican is the other pelican species found in North America and the one that was heavily affected by DDT. It's a more coastal breeder.
