Dead fish at Hubbard?

Dead fish at Hubbard? - 05/05/03 01:11 PM

My son and I fished Hubbard on Saturday and I noticed that there were tons of dead carp floating around on all parts of the lake. I also saw a few dead catfish in the bunch. Anyone know why so many fish seem to be dying? My buddy also checked his juglines at hubbard and had about 20 catfish on there that had a bunch of white bumps on them. He said the meat was buttery and not like it usually is so he didnt want to take a chance at eating them. Any ideas?

I believe the carp spawn kills alot of the males. Seems like I read that somewhere. My brother and I were on RC Sunday, and there were carp jumping all over that lake.

Roadrunner and I saw a few big dead and bloated catfish on RayBob Saturday. I don't know what caused this.

James, I saw some floating today at Hubbard, I was hoping to see you or Duck_Jerky so yall could tell me where the sandies were. We didn't put in untile about 5:00 and came out at 7:00. I caught 10 dinks and Phillip I think caught about 3. It was so hazey across the water that we mostly stayed around Robinson Park(or is it Robertson), along with about 5 other boats. Sharon

_Hey Sharon: Try up on the Flats between the I-30 and Hwy 66 bridges. We used to troll Bomber 5 series in Chrome/Blue back or Normans Little N Chrome Black back. If the water is Murky try a Chartruse Crank Med divers and Stop to throw spoons like a 1/2oz Pet Spoon when you get bit on the crank!!! The birds usually work back on the banks where the shad get blown in. 2 chart or pink flea flies under a weighted popping cork is hard to beat for the banks when they're running shad!!

_Good Luck Chasing Them Sandies Yall!!

Yes, I fished hubbard today and saw hundreds if not thousands of large dead and sick carp.

We did catch several bass and they appeared healthy.

Its ok with me if a few carp die but i hope in not something more serious, like golden Alge Bloom!

Anyone know whats up?

I was out there this evening also. I fished almost the entire 66 riprap and there were friggin dead carp everywhere. I saw allot swimming that were sick also. I think it is an algae bloom. I have not seen the water this warm this early in a long time. 81 degrees.

We've seen them dead all up and down the banks and several floating. Seen a lot of live ones swimming like they're drunk. Wade fishing Saturday, I had one swim right up to me, bump me, re-direct his route, then continue on slowly. I've looked at the fresh dead ones, they dont appear to have any spawn damage that I can tell. Everything that I've caught so far out of Hubbard has appeared to be very healthy, blues, channels, flatheads, sandies, etc.
Would this Golden Alge Bloom stuff only affect carp at first, like if it were in it's early stages and this was an early indicator?

Carp do not die during the spawn, these are not Salmon. More than likely this is a very serious problem and will probably affect other fish as well. These fish kills are getting nuts, we need to do something. But what....

Curtis, this is my first post. I caught 3 nice blues from hubbard yesterday morning, fried 2 of them up and ate them last night. No ill effects yet. Did notice some black discoloration around the mouth that i hadn't seen before.
I have seen a die off of carp before but not to this degree.
By the way great site. Tight lines and full baskets.

Well since I am too lazy to set trotlines, I am going to go to hubbard one evening this week and drift for catfish using some fresh bluegills that I caught. I will look at them closely and if they look good they are going in the skillet!!!!

I caught some sandies three weeks ago and ate them. I am still here and posting. I also put 16 in the live well weekend before last and have not had a chance to eat those but they looked good. That same weekend I caught a 5 lb largemouth and it appeared healthy. Not sure what is going on but I hope it isn't the dreaded golden algae bloom!!!
