Does anyone know who has certified scales and will weigh a fish for the record books around Canyon Lake ?
Thanks in advance !

What did you catch? a perch? No need for scales at that dump hole fishery.

Black Crappie. Dump hole fishery.... Really? it's tougher to fish than most lakes, but once you figure the lake out, it is a great lake for Stripers and whites, and crappie aren't bad, the smallmouth are good but tough to find. I dpn't fish largemouth, but I know some guys that do and catch some nice ones. And I didn't mention cats, and I even had the blue cat record a couple of years ago.

I have heard fisherman's corner has certified scales, but I do not know this to be a fact. Maybe give them a call.

Yea I tried them, they are listed on TPWD website for certified scales along with Canyon Bait House, but I talked to both of them and they both said "they didn't have certified scales". You would think Fishermans Corner would have certified scales since he is in the business of selling catfish by the pound, but that was his exact words.

I have a personal set certified and live in NB...give me call (as long as it's not the wee hrs of night) and I'd be happy to certify it for you.

Guess I should quit bass fishing there and try the crappie! Nice catch for sure, do you catch them with minners or jigs, I have never crappie fished before.

my dad fishes Canyon a lot and the funny thing is, he said one day he caught a bunch on minnows at one hole and they wouldn't touch jigs, then went to a different hole and it was just the opposite... go figure.

Any opinions, from those familiar with the lake, on where that was caught? And don't say in the lake/water/mouth/etc. I'm testing a theory.

Re: Canyon Lake Certified Scales - 05/08/11 02:30 PM

On the North side by the public beach (by the long point) that is towards the dam. I'm not that familiar with the lake so I'm not sure of the name, maybe its called Comal Park? Heck of a fish no doubt and if I remember correctly it is almost the record, I think I once heard it was 10.6 caught by Jim Files.
O.K so what is the answer?
