The Gallatin River in Big Sky is absolutely beautiful and has some good trout fishing. We had success fly fishing. It has some crazy rapids though so be careful! I think it is a popular white water rafting location. If Cooke City is near Big Sky I would check it out.

I believe there is also a river in Yellow Stone which might be closer to you.

Hope you have a good trip!

You will be going through Lamar Valley. Bring your camera and be on the lookout for bears, wolves, sheep, bison etc.

Butch, Mike here. Just left Yellowstone this evening. Near Cook City you have a lot of fishing opportunities. One that has easy access and quite a few trout id Soda Butte creek. As you re enter the park it is on your left. From the Etry to about 1/2 mile into the Lamar Valley is some of the best fishing on that side of the park. If you'd like more info message me and we can talk. We go to Yellowstone yearly and usually spend a night or 2 in or near Cook City.
Tight lines~

Wish I’d seen this sooner. There are plenty of ways to catch em in the river on 8-10# test and easy to throw lures….
Worked up there for 6 years and got pretty good at it without having to fly fish. Although fly fishing is a blast once you get it down.

Mepp’s gold spinner if it’s sunny or silver w some pink if it’s cloudy. Throw it upstream and let it tumble back to you and past w the current. 8-10 lb test.
Rapala baby trout hard stick bait fished the same way.
I pinch the barbs flat since I release my fish and it keeps the locals happy. Treble w barbs are hard on those trout.
