Who is an all around fisherman?

Who is an all around fisherman? - 05/01/21 10:10 PM

I mostly concentrate on one species of fish and most of my time and tackle is geared that direction but I always enjoy it when I catch something else. How many on here would say that they are a multi species fisherman and have put in the time and training to catch all different kinds of fish?

Primary for me are channel and blue cats year round, Big Blues in fall and winter just for fun. Channels any size and up to 5 pounds blues for table fare. Crappie anytime I am not catfishing. Bass just to pass the time and hybrids/whites when nothing else will bite. Summer I fish for Carp/buffalos to freeze for winter bait when shad get really hard to come by in winter. I only fish rod and reel, have nothing against any other method. Just fish for relaxation and the thrill of fighting a big blue with a R&R.

The diversity of fish in Texas is one of the main reasons I like fishing in the state. Decades ago I started fishing for records and a big part of that is learning to catch different species of fish. I have records for over 60 species of fish, so I guess that makes me a multi-species fisherman. roflmao To accomplish my record goals I have learned to fish with a rod and reel, fly rod, pole and line, handline, and bow and arrow. Teaching other anglers, especially kids, about the different fish species available in Texas, is one of my greatest joys.

I will fish for anything that bites, especially if it puts up a good fight! Whenever I'm looking to fish for food I'll target hybrids, white bass, catfish or crappie but if I'm just looking to go out and have some fun then it doesn't matter to me what's on my line. I've spent whole days targeting only carp, only bluegill, only LMB etc and had a blast but the best days I've had on the water have been from multi-species sessions where every bite has me wondering what's on the hook.

I enjoy catching everything. Bass, crappie, carp, gar, sunfish, whites, catfish, doesn’t matter. I just love the fight.

Have you ever considered writing a book?
It would be a shame not to share all that knowledge!
I could probably write one on how not catch a fish! roflmao

I fish for bass, crappie and catfish. I was a die hard bass guy for years. Tournaments and all that. I still love to bass fish but just for fun. I really enjoy crappie fishing with jigs now too. Best of all is the eating afterwards! Lol. Catfish are awesome too, I love catching blues when they are on! Flatheads are a wonderful fish! I got really into chasing them on the Trinity river and I caught some monsters. I am one of those guys who will jump from one fish to another according to the season or how I feel. I have the gear to do it all. I have a bass boat with everything I need ready to go. And a 16’ Jon boat I use for crappie and cats. I just love to fish!

I have migrated from ditch pickles to striped fish to crappie. In Salt water, I just love to have a bend in my pole , everything from specs to Tarpon,

Before moving to Texas, I was definitely more an all-around fisherman and would go after panfish, perch, crappie, pike, walleye, Northern Pike, Musky or whatever else would bite but since I have been down here I have focused about 99% of my time on the water for Black Bass in order to keep raising my PB.

+1 on Richard Gene. I was thinking of him when I started this this thread. I have started to spend more time and effort to learn how to catch multiple species of fish on a regular basis. I am impressed by how Richard Gene does it and that he doesn't break the bank in his efforts.

I don't have a choice what bites my lures - small lures are capable of catching many fish species on the same outing. The problem (and challenge) arises when fighting large fish on light tackle. Unless everything is perfect (line, drag, gear ratio, knowing how to play a fish), the big ones will get away.

And that is why I don’t use light tackle when I fish, unless I am going after a line class record. I can’t stand it when a big one gets away. roflmao Losing big ones gives me nightmares.

I fish largemouth, smallmouth, striper, hybrid, whites, cats and trout. It depends on the time of year and where I am.

I target the Bluegill/Sunfish! Great fighters on ultralight tackle. thumb

Side Note: I have caught many of other types of bigger fish while fishing for the Bluegill! hooked

I only go out fishing for bass but I might catch a lot of other things doing that.
I have not kept a fish and taken it home to eat in probably 40 years. I did a couple years ago keep some fish I caught and took them to a pond a buddy had built to stock his pond. Now all those bass are huge and he treats them like his kids. Hands feeds them and provides them with everything a bass would love.
