rigged my anchor like that for years. put a plastic float on the rope about a foot above the chain to keep rope out of rocks etc.

Lots of guys in the younger generation don't use chains. Shoot, in the age of spot lock and power poles, many don't even have anchors. To me, the anchor is an essential safety device on a boat. If the boat loses power, I'd like to decide if I stay in one spot or let the wind and current carry me along.

There are plenty of stories of disabled boats that ended up bashed in timber or on the shoreline for want of an adequate anchor. I've been in storms that were no match for any trolling motor or shaft anchor poles.
