Experts say it has to do with the gravitational pull against the horizontal vs the vertical that gets a longer cast. (Saa whaaa?) I'm too old school to switch my technique now. LOL

on really long casts with hang time I start to turn my spool into the vertical position. Seems to help a bit

Nope! Turning the handle up or down only allows the wrist to rotate in a more natural axis. No impact at all on distance/backlashing!
