Beavers Bend - Rod n Reel setup?

I am going camping with the kids in a few weeks and going trout fishing. I know fly rods are mainly used there but I dont own one nor do I know how (one day though). I know how I rig for trout here in TX. Dont know how to rig for throwing upstream. Does anyone have experience using rod and reel on mountains fork? Red salmon eggs? Powerboat? Split shot? -thanks.

When I lived in ID, CO, and WA if you do a rod/reel we always used a Santee or Carolina rig but we used little cork slip floats on the leader line instead of cigar floats.

Rainbow power bait worked for us but I prefer worms

- 4# test line
- Spin cast or spinning set up
- Split shot just enough to cast upstream
- Size 8 snelled hooks (Eagle Claw makes a red hook that I have used for years. Not sure if the color makes a difference but it's all I throw when I'm on the river.)
- red salmon eggs. Lot of people use Power Bait. I have had some luck with the rainbow dough bait by Berkley but salmon eggs never fail me.
- I fish 'holes' in the eddys and also cast upstream and let the current bring it down in a natural type flow. Some areas have moss/weeds on the bottom that split shot will catch in or your hook. With kids a light cork helps them see their line and obviously detect the fish.

Tha ks H20 great info. Do you know where to get the salmon eggs? Do you think the beavers bend bait shop will have some?

Depending on where you live Wal Mart has them this time of year. Wal Mart in Broken Bow had some but not sure how often they restock. The convenience stores in Hochatown usually carry them but they are about $3-$5 a jar higher than if you buy them before you go. Online ordering is an option too.

Buy a can of corn and put a couple of kernels on the hook. Trout love corn.

Thanks. I'll check the Wal-Mart and academy. I'm in DFW but ai dont think I have seen them there.

I saw a setup without using any float and using a double hook with eggs on the bottom and powerbait on top. The split shot would tick the bottom but the powerboat kept the eggs in the fishes eyesight. They said that is also a good way to determine if they want PB or eggs that day.

Anyone try that method or one like it?

Yes the fly shop in the park as well as Walmart and just about every convenience store in Hochatown or Broken Bow will carry them.

I use a tiny split shot about 8-12 inches above a salmon egg hook. I use a fly fishing strike indicator and just let the current carry the bait down stream. I'll usually open the bail and let the bait float down the current as fare as I can still see the indicator. That is as long as there aren't people down stream.

Look at the bottom of the jar, pick one that isn't a pink/red goo from decomposition.
Green lid Balls of Fire are the best in my opinion.
Another option is the red wigglers, one per #8 red hook is a slam dunk.
Also check for fresh ones by waking them up a little, dig your finger into the middle to ensure they're not dead.

Light spinning gear (6ft) rod 4pd line. Super duper’s (silver or gold) worked best for me. Powerbait trout worms ( orange or pink) small split shot with snelled hook. Rig it according to flow.! Cast upstream to 11 o’clock

Got back from there a few days ago, we had our best luck on super dupers near a spot called "Evening Hole" on google maps. It actually looks nothing like what it does on google maps, I had to look at it a few times to make sure I was looking at the right spot.

We caught about 10 per day, not too much size to them, but it was fun.

Shady Oaks and Sevens Gap both had pretty good food.

The steak in the restaurant in the park was easily the worst steak Ive ever had, so I would avoid that one lol.

Get some Berkley power worms in orange, red, pink, and pink and white or at least the first 3. Try in that order. Also red salmon eggs. Red is a good color choice in clear water. I use ultra light rod and reels spooled with 6 lb. There can be some good size trout in there and with the current they can be a battle. I have had several break off. Last one stole one of my favorite spinners. If they are not hitting the eggs and worm try spinners. I have some special ones called Joe's flies that a buddy in WV sends me. They have a colorado blade in brass or silver and a hammered or smooth finish with a fly and small trailer hook. Blades are interchangeable.
