How to breed shiners in captivity? - 07/11/18 08:20 PM

Hi guys. I am looking for advice on how to breed shiners in captivity. I recently captured several pairs of Red Shiners out of the Brazos that I am keeping in my 55 Gallon Aquarium at them moment. In my opinion, God never created a better bait minnow then the Red Shiner (Red Horse Minnow). I use them every chance I can get, but you seldom find them for sale at bait shops and I can't always make the trip to the river to seine some out. So, I would like to start breeding them for my own use, that way I will have them when I need them.

I have looked around and found several people that are successfully breeding them, but not much information about HOW they are doing it. Has anyone here ever breed them, or know of where I can get some good information on how to do it? Thanks.

Try the following link.

What you might find is getting fish to breed is easy once you create the correct conditions, raising the fry is much, much harder.
For most egg layers, the fry are small and infurosia cultures are initially required, before moving to baby brine shrimp.
Good luck.

Thanks. I have found similar articles in which people had accidental success, but were not quite sure what contributed to it as in the article you linked to.

My 55 gallon tank is currently set to 77 degrees F. I has an abundance of artificial vegetation and multiple log structures. I two other types of minnows in the tank with the red shiners. Bullhead minnows (Pimephales vigilax), and Eastern Mosquitofish, which were capture in the seine with the red shiners. Once I get an idea of how to breed the red shiners, I plan to move breeding pairs to their one container.

The Red Shiner, or Red Horse Minnow is the best fishing bait God ever invented. wink

Tell me you would not want to gobble this guy up if you were a fish.
