Confirm Something for Me - 05/12/18 02:45 PM

My SIL was here at the house and discussing fresh water tournaments where he used to live, and that was in West Tawakoni. He mention an event using "Trot Lines"!! I have never heard of this. What species of fish would be involved with such an event and is this True?

I know what they are. I have worked many many Saltwater tournament weigh stations in 20 years but I have never heard of a tourney where anglers do not use rod and reels.......only trot lines.

Fish with whiskers. Tournaments where you catch them by any legal means, most weight wins.

OK I assume this a "Freshwater" thing. The only thing I know about Freshwater is that I drink it and take a bath in it. Just sayin'

I guess it’s a freshwater thing, not sure the catfish in the ocean are worth eating.

Actually many years ago - I have caught saltwater catfish when I lived in Ecuador. It was extremely good eating. I have no clue to the actual species - caught on shrimp in the surf. Had one of local cooks at our hotel prepare it - he took one fillet as payment for the work. No clue about the saltwater varieties of catfish here in texas

For a simple answer: its a catfish tournament & yes its true.,. Tawokoni is a superb catfish lake. My BIL( thats Brother In Law) fishes there regularly. He & his BIL(Brother In Law married to his SIS[Sister] like to rig up heavy rod & reels for catfish 30#'s & up. They've caught many over 50#'s.

thumb obviously I don’t ever make it to the salt water.

As far as, “why a trot line tournament”? I guess guys enjoy doing it, so that’s reason enough.

Hope wherever there doing it they do it legally, I get so mad at people setting trotlines in the local lakes around here, they don't Mark them no tags and they never come back and take them up since the water level has drop you have to cut your way into some of the creek arms because of the trotlines hanging 2 or 3 feet out of the water but I do have a 5 gallon bucket half full of catfish hooks and swivles

BUMP!!!!

Hey V-Bottom I go to Hitchcock,Tx. the middle of August every year and will be there the 13th thru 19th this year.
ANYWAY, the only place I can fish is a 2'- 3' deep channel behind our rental house .... can you point me to a good spot to catch small eater type fish?
I did catch a 19" flounder on a crappie jig and lots of small reds in the channel.

If you can deal with the the enormous amount of slime. I would rather cut the line than have them in the boat.
Anyone who has ever caught one knows this.
