This week was a barrage of comments, emails and requests on paddle vs pedal thoughts. I have some thoughts but the separatists and purists won't like them.

Another week goes by and another 12 debates erupt on the internet about whether pedal kayaks are actually kayaks. Paddlers take up their side, pedalers take their side and the war of what is right rages on.

In an internet forum or Facebook wall it rages on.

This was the hot topic for my inbox this week so Ill give my thoughts on the pedal vs paddle debate. Ready? Here goes.

Can we be done with this? All week I get emails about which I think is the truest form of kayaking from paddlers. All week I get messages from the pedal folks about how short sighted the paddlers are about moving into the future.

Ill say it: This is the new Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge vs Toyota debate.

Why can't the paddlers and pedalers get along and team up on the guys with trolling motors?

Huh? Roger, you turncoat! Next time I'll bring my Commander with the trolling motor. I'll have a custom prop in the fall, which should increase my top speed by at least 2 mph.

I believe I would have won everything outright the way it was set up. My Commander is running flat out in 5 or 6 seconds, and with the TM at the stern, it turns pretty well, too.

But, if you want to know the real facts, in the real world, none of us can hope to keep up with the Adventure Island that Zombie and I sailed at the GTG. It can easily double the speed of any of the other kayaks that were there, and do it with 3 people on board. And when you are maneuvering in tight quarters, you simply furl the sail, and pedal.

I can totally understand the purist standpoint I feel like the PA or Propel is not the same as a conventional kayak. But mainly because it will carry and peddle so much gear over a kayak. But a "qayaq" is made of a wood frame and a stretched skin not plastic. Once you make it out of plastic and rename it you change the game completely. I also researched why the Inuit used a paddle, because they had no other choice LOL!

Nothing wrong with a Ford or Chevy debate when you compare Ford and Chevy or even Toyota. Its when Oscar comes along and thinks he is a Ford or Chevy. rolfmao

Or just follow the prescribed course and you can beat Roger!!!
