My girlfriend has gotten into fishing with me and now she's hooked! She gets out of class around 11 Saturday so we'll be heading south around then. I just dont want her to get skunked... Any recommendations?

Do y'all fish with bait or lures? (That'll narrow down a lot)
Are y'all targeting any certain species? (Saying "anything that bites" doesn't help)
Where do y'all plan to go? (The Texas coast is BIG)

I'm pretty sure he is headed to Galveston if he is from Houston. go to seawolf or galveston state park fish the bay side. If you can find them live shrimp under a popping cork. Dead shrimp or finger mullet will get you hits. If you fish artificials, I have been having success with flounders and specks using new penny chicken boy lures and specks rigs pink or red, and paddle tails new penny or gold colors lol the exact color gets censored__ of the walk.

The surf should be clear to the beach.

Sylvan Beach or Texas City. I'll have the kids out at one of these places catching croaker and pinfish for my Sunday offshore trip. Last weekend they filled up a five gallon bucket in an hour off of Sylvan Beach Pier. They had small stingrays, brown eels, and croaker. They also caught and released a few black drum, redfish and bonnetheads.

Yeah I noticed a lot of lurkers here... either way, thanks for responding. We have recently tries switching to artificials after a streak of hardheads but we still take some squid and/or fresh dead shrimp . As far as target, I'd hope a red or two but I'd be just as happy with a decent black drum or croaker. We are downtown Houston so for us it can be anywhere from clear lake to rollover pass to Surfside. Maybe we have too many options for our limited knowledge.

Anahuac wildlife refuge should be turning on as well. Good trout, reds, gafftop and croaker there.

UPDATE We had a late start and worried about where to go once we got on 45. We settled on Rollover. High winds dirty choppy water... no dice. (But man did the water crossing the ferry look nice. Clear Emerald green!) So we went around the corner and did some surf fishing She caught and released a 15" whiting and we both caught and released 8-10 hardheads in that same size area. I was watching this mess of birds about 100 yds. out tearing up a school of something, and it looked like it was going to drift to us but it stayed out. We also hit up clear lake yesterday where she caught and released a 12" flounder. All in all a good weekend, and I didnt even get drunk!

Try Texas Ciy Dike. $5 a car. I took my boys out yesterday and on the beach side the water was nice, wind was at our back. My boys used up 2 pounds of shrimp and caught lots of croaker, whiting and sand trout (not a single hardhead):). When I say a lot, I mean 50+ each. No monsters but these guys had a time.
