I like everything about a Pro XS, nothing wrong with a SHO either, I guess actually you cannot go wrong with either of them.

I would really like a sho but I keep hearing that they are having trouble with blowing power heads. Was this just on early models or is it still happening.

They will all blow power heads at some point and time, regardless if it is a SHO or Mercury. Just by the extended warranty and go fishing!

Big fan of any of the yamahas. Personally I have had a 25 HP 4stroke, 115hp 4stroke, and now the 250 SHO. It's hard to beat a Yamaha for reliability. I like the Mercs ok. I wouldn't own a 2stroke though. As long as its not an Etec you'll be fine.

Sorry pros and cons.

Merc- is probably cheaper for the same HP range.
It's a 2stroke you have to add oil continuously.
Good hole shot.
Maybe slightly better top end speed. +/-1or2mph.
Obviously the merc will be lighter in weight.

Yamaha- 4strokes tend to be more reliable.
Start better in colder weather.
Oil changes like a car every 100hrs.
Very good hole shot. Tons of low end torque
Great top end but like I said maybe a hair slower than the merc.
Heavier.
More expensive.

Hope this gives you an idea. Try comparable boats with boat motors and see what you like best. Both are great choices.

Etec is actually a great motor, but back to topic.

Personally as much as I love the SHO, I've got 4 buddies that have them and all have dealt with blown powerheads at least once. I've got another buddy that has a ProXS that needed a new cool pack once. Personally for me I'll run the Mercury.

Towed in 3 different times in a broke down Etec. My opinion JUNK period. One trip we were in Baffin Bay and had a 2 1/2 hour tow back to the ramp because the whole lower unit fell off. Add a blown power head. And a thrown rod. All different motors, all motors roughly a year old.
