If you can afford it go 4 cycle....big boat....250 SHO....as the Yamaha tech was repairing my boat at last years Skeeter Owner Tournament, I asked what should I do for reliability....that was his advice.

I've had more powerhead/engine problems with my Optimax Pro XS than I ever had with past Yamaha's. Though I haven't owned a SHO. (Yet)

I have one and have never had a problem. Anytime a new motor comes out everytime one blows it goes on the internet. Same thing happened with the ETEC motors. There are lots of 2 strokes that blow too, just don't get reported.
The majority of SHO owners have never had a problem.

I think they have been out long enough now that they have worked out all of the bugs. Most outboards are only as good as the owner. If you run them hard and don't take care of them, they will give you problems. If you take care of them, they will treat you right.

Blew mine with 56 hrs on it. Yamaha had it back to me and on the water in a week. They never would tell me what actually went wrong with it. Still has a warranty and no issues since. Would definitely buy another one, was told by the dealership that they haven't had any that they have replaced come back yet. So I guess yamaha knew what the problem was and fixed it. ( I hope)

I've had 2 with no problems at all other than.....well... 3 bent prop shafts solely due to operator error. Great engine!

broke mine in via yamahas instructions, almost 200 hours so far and no problems at all with the motor, other than operator running the prop into the mud ect. a fine strong recommended motor, not as expensive as you might think, e me here and I can try to help you out on one

Glad here all the good news. I'm picking up my new skeeter in a week with a shiny new 250 SHO. I do intend to follow the break procedure to the letter as well.

I've heard there is 4 things as why they have blowed to much idle, not broke in correctly, not letting them warm up and not drove like you stole them.
