Early spring time hybrid action will give you something to talk about. Catching these Hybrid Stripers in early spring are just a blast and will create memories that will keep you coming back for spring time fun year after year. Even though the fish can't reproduce they are full of eggs this time of year which puts a couple of extra pounds on them. This just adds to the fight of this already big angry game fish. Drop a 4 inch 1 ounce banana colored sassy shad down and get ready for some line stretching and drag singing.
This time of year locating feeding birds is the key to a good day of fishing. A good pair of binoculars can save you lots of time and gas. Feeding seagulls and terns look like a small white tornado working over the lake. When you spot this type of bird action, it's better to pull up on the up wind side and slowly drift into the feeding fish. It's always best to stay out of the heaviest schooling action and cast into it, but sometimes the schooling fish just engulf your boat and bam youre just in the middle of the school.
Lots of days the better hybrids are on the outside of the schooling action. In deeper water you want to make a really long cast and count the seconds off from the time the bait hits the water until you get to 15 or 20. Wherever I see fish are on my depth finder, I start the count when the bait hits the water and stop the count when I get a strike. This way you will know where exactly to stop the bait on the next cast. I have always felt like the bait that I am using will fall a foot a second so if my fish finder shows fish at 25 feet, a count of 25 should put you on fish.
Little fishing tip: Early spring afternoon's can be even better fishing then the mornings. Water temperature warms up during the day and by afternoon the fish might be going crazy. It seems like it's always a strong south wind that really gets these fish going this time of year.
Sand bass and hybrids really like it HOT. The warmer it gets the better they bite.
Hybrids and sand bass are thanking about spawning now. So when the wind is blowing out of the south, Pelican Island might be all you need to limit on everything.
Our blue catfish are feeding shallow most days now. With the shad beginning to spawn along the shoreline, I look for a place where the fish might get funneled in by the wind. I'll set up and throw a fresh caught shad into a likely spot and if the fish are there it want take but a minute to get the first bite. These are really nice catfish and a blast to catch.
Folks are catching lots of spawning crappie up shallow. By late April and early May these fish will be migrated back to the timber, brush piles, and bridge columns.
That's when we GETTUM!!
