Hey fellas, just bought a new to me 95 Bass Cat w/ a150 Mariner EFI. It came with two props. 1. 3 blades 23p and 2. 4 blade 24p. I've been using the 3 blade and it has a so-so hole shot. I tried the 4 blade yesterday and th holeshot was terrible. I'm thinking about switching out to a 21p 4 blade to try and get the boat up quicker.
The boat is 18' w/ a 27gal tank and a 300# driver. Anyone have thoughts on what I may be able to expect with this change?

At WOT, what RPM's have you been turning with each prop. You don't want to prop it and get outside your RPM range. How deep are you running the motor? I am not sure I would commit to buying another prop until I talked to Steve at his prop shop. It may not just be a prop issue, it most likely involves your set up as a whole. http://www.stevescustomprops.com/

I understand. My tach is currently out of service and is on my list of repairs. I've been planning a visit to Steve's, but haven't made it up that way.

Call steves custom props and see what he recommends you will save a lot of wasted time trying props that way also ask him where to set the motor height for your boat. The height could be the issue or weight distribution in the boat.

With the 24p 4-blade and the motor tucked under the nose of the boat sits up (@ about the 1:30 to 2:00 position) for about the first 4-5 seconds. With the 3-blade it is down to 3-4 seconds before the nose comes down and the stern starts to come up.
A buddy loaned me a 19p High 5, but the thrust washer for his prop was too thin and the shoulder was quite a bit larger than the one that was on my other two props. I'd like to have seen what it would have done, but I didn't feel comfortable using my thrust washer (thicker w/ a small shoulder)on the prop that needed a larger shoulder.

ok.
when you hit the throttle. does the engine bog (what does the tach read when ya nail it)
or does it bog?
is the 24p a mercury trophy plus? if so remove two pvs plugs and see if that helps the hole shot.

I wouldn't say it bogs down, it just dosent lift. Yes it is a Trophy prop and the plugs are already out.
One thing I noticed is that the motor may be about an inch too low. The center of the prop shaft and the bottom center of the rear portion of the pad are about 4 1/2 inches apart. I saw on the propshop website that the preferred setting is 3 1/2 inches.

What are you looking to get out of your boat? Fast out of the hole? Haul a$$? More bow lift? All around performance?

There is a jackplate on the boat. I'd like to really have a good hole shot. If I lose some on the top end that would be acceptable....I'm not really worried about screaming down the lake.

I think if you move the motor up and run the 24 you have with 2 plugs removed you will be see increases in all around performance. Set up is equally as important as the right prop and when you get it dialed in you will know.
