If someone resides in Texas and purchases a boat out of state (say Kansas) would you have to pay sales tax out of state and then again when you register the boat in Texas.
Thank you.

And If they do make you pay tax in the other state, you will only pay the difference in Texas, I spoke with the TPWD about this about 5 months ago when I bought mine from out of state.

I bought my last boat in Missouri and was told they don't collect the sales tax, that I would pay it in Ks. when I registered it. I registered it and asked about the sales tax here. They said, that it was Missouri's problem not theirs. I didn't argue.

+1.

Also, don't forget you can deduct the sales tax as an add on to the standard sales tax deduction if you itemize.

I bought one in Loisiana years ago without paying Texas taxes and the following week an officer from the state comptroller's office came to my house and collected the taxes. He also pointed to the trailer hitch on the back of his car.
