I've only been bass fishing for a couple years, but in that short amount of time have been out to Canyon lake a couple dozen times as its very close to where I live. The best day I've ever had is maybe 6 bass, maybe three of those being keepers. More often than not, I'll only catch a couple dinks, or like today get skunked. I've fished a lot of the lake from the guadalupe to the dam, focusing mostly on drop shot and carolina rigs on points and trees as it seems to be the most popular methods on this lake, but I just cant seem to figure it out.

Ive scoured the internet, forums, and talked to locals, and it seems the consensus seems to be that canyon lake is just simply not a good fishing lake. I really dont want to believe that, so I ask anyone with experience, is it possible to consistently catch fish on this lake, or are my expectations too high? When I go to other lakes in the area (LBJ for example) I average a 2-3 fish an hour, which I know isnt that great either, but its something blush . Not looking to steal anyones honey hole, but just wondering if I should keep at it or give up and find a new spot to fish crazy

Keep at it. It is a tough lake but they are in there. Ive never caught more than 20 in a day and I live there and fish it a lot. I have also caught a couple of 10s out of Canyon and multiple 6s and 7s. And I fish out of a jon boat. just wanted to give you a few words of encouragement. Try the area near boat ramp 6 {Toms Creek} lots of standing timber and plenty of structure for bass

white and chart chatterbait/white lft magic shad or big bite cane thumper trailer for this time of yr. throw in mouth of river back to a few hundred yds in (if you can go that far).

also use it around the ramp above. jig with craw trailer in green pumpkin or spring craw should work too.

I would like to fish Canyon more, but from what I've seen, its water clarity is a lot better than some of the other "better fishing lakes". Does anyone think that this is a factor when trying to get them to bite, maybe easily spooked?

Was there yesterday, water clear as gin in most of lake. One bite, 1 bass, 16" on shakey head with baby brush hog trailer. Caught on stick up in 16' of water, could see fish as soon as I set the hook. I second the notion of easily spoked fish.
We need rain, maybe 20" or so, not all on same day.

if it is that clear then turn off the depth finders and set trolling motor on 1 or 2, start from waaaaay back to get to where you are going and they will never care.

also sidearm cast, waving that long stick in the air to throw a bait will do it.

I fished canyon a lot way back when and when it got super clear I went to the north side of the dam and fished the rocks, it gets shady there early and that helps hide you.

Yeah sounds like if you're using any other line than really light fluerocarbon, they are gonna see it. Bhsmith, was that bass suspended when you caught or was 16' close to the bottom. Also, what color brush hog was it?

It's also been extremely cold this winter, so when I go to Rayburn and it's fishing bad because these cold fronts have this fish confused, I can only imagine the bass in Canyon must have thought that they were supposed to be rainbow trout with how cold the water might have gotten.

I've been fishing Canyon since 1972, It's a tough lake no doubt. Like others have said, go with light line and long casts. Don't expect to catch fish on this lake by flipping into trees you are near. Some areas have some color to the water and is more forgiving.
Finesse baits work best for me, spinner baits are ok but crank baits will get you more bites..stick to natural colored baits most of the year.. i'm not giving up all my secrets, lol
My advice to you is spend time, lots of time just looking with sonar, finding the sweet spots along off shore structure, drop offs, rock piles, creek bends, deep trees and humps.
The lake being low and much colder than normal makes it harder than usual.. winter fish i've caught in 50+foot of water but don't like doing it as their air bladders are out of their mouths no matter how slow they are brought up.
With spring approaching bass will spawn in 10+ ft of water in the clearer parts of Canyon.
I've had 30+ fish a day without much effort and a week later it kicks my butt...but if you can catch fish on Canyon you can catch fish anywhere.. Good luck!
