Im looking to start tying flies. Vices aren't too expensive ($20) or so but im unsure as to what I need to actually start tying.
I would like to start with a nice basic clouser pattern for Bass.
Bass and Bluegill are what im targeting, and im really interested in tying some big streamers and baitfish patterns.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys! cheers

Hi Ozark88 There are multitude of info sources out there since the Internets arrived.
Here is one site that is possibly useful.

I saw your other post where you will be at Fly Fish Texas Saturday. My recommendation is arrive when the doors open at 9:00 and go directly to the Angler's Pavilion to the fly tyer's area. The demonstration tyers are most active early in the morning and the crowds are also the smallest. So, you can spend more time with each tyer earlier in the day.

Spend some time watching them and asking questions and you'll learn a significant amount about fly tying. Then later in the day, attend one of the beginning fly tying classes for some hands on practice.

You should get answers to many of your questions on Saturday.

Good luck!

Hi Ozark
Both the advise from Rrhyne and Rex is sound advise, I am thinking that the show will offer the best help as you will be there one on one to ask specific questions about techniques etc
there are also a great bunch of tyers in the forum that can help as well, unfortunately I will not be able to make the show on Saturday

Oh, who am I fooling? It's a lot of fun, and a great addition to the fly fishing experience.
Welcome to the madness!

At risk of sounding pedantic, also will need hooks, thread, scissors and possibly a whip finisher. Opinion is divided on whip finishers, I love them. You can get Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails at any Walmart or beauty outlet. Works well for cement.

FYI, Cabela's used to sell a bag of bucktail pieces. It was a relatively inexpensive way to get a variety of bucktail colors. Buying full tails in multiple colors can get expensive quickly.

ok thanks for the input guys! got scissors and hooks. Ill see how I do without a whip finisher and if I feel the need ill look into them.
Also, found out I wont be able to make it up to Athens. Super bummed as it would have been a lot of fun.

If "hand whip finisher" is not learned already, you will thank your self many times for this technique.

Add some pearl crystal flash to that list and it's perfect.
For inexpensive synthetic Materials, try the Flytiers Dungeon. (http://www.flytyersdungeon.com/). You could get 2 colors for what you would pay for 1 elsewhere, and the hanks are generous.
