Very possible. There are a couple native freshwater lampreys. I had one attached to a 4lber I caught at Dardanelle. I stuck him to the steering wheel for a little while, then released them. The native species do not kill the host. Pretty neat fish actually. I'm not sure what a fresh scar would look like though.

have caught several good fish there with lampreys on them...looks just like one
