Hey guys, looks like I might be headed to Aruba in May. I'll be fly fishing of course, but am needing some advice on a good saltwater setup that won't break the bank. I'll be targeting bones, small tarpon, possibly jacks and permit. Mainly in the flats and mangroves.

Does anyone know if this is a good setup? The Cabela's RLS combo. Is it even suitable for saltwater?

Cabela's RLS Combo

Appreciate any tips. Thanks!

You might check out my Orvis Frequent Flyer 9wt. tip flex rod at Rods and Reels for sale. Paired with my Battenkill Bar Stock IV might give you the gear you need in a compact travel package. I can even switch the 8 wt. line that is on it with Orvis Wonderline Bass currently on the Pfluerger.

Others note: I have permission to insert this link. cool

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

RLS is a fine rig. From what little I know about tarpon and bones, I'd personally go with the 8 weight, whicheverf route you take.

I'm not sure what your budget is but if you can afford it I would go with a TFO. They run about 260 dollars depending where you buy them. I have and 8wt axiom and a 9wt bvk and I love both of them.

I have one paired with a sage 1880 series reel and the other paired with a tfo 375 reel. A permit with blow up a reel that doesn't have a quality drag system, idk anything about the rls combo bud I'd definitely check into the quality of the reel before I bought it, especially for bones and permit.

8wt tfo mangrove. Very nice rod for the money and tfo warranty is awesome. I have an allen kraken paired up with it. Won't break your bank and is a very nice setup.

What can you tell me about your setup? I might actually go look at a Mangrove today. Is the Kraken a good reel? Or would I be better off buying a "better known" brand name, like say the TFO 375 large arbor?

all rods are suitable for saltwater if you wash them after a days fishing. Ole Al taught me to take my fly rod into the shower with me; keeps em free of salt-p-

Kraken hasn't let me down yet. It's the kraken 3 and is very light for its size. I mostly fly fish the surf so it gets a lot of sand and salt. Drag is sealed so just rinse the reel after use. I have 300yds of gel spun 30lb backing with fly line. The spool is a deep v. It's had jacks, reds, specs and I've hooked 1 tarpon on it. Drags tough. For the price I've been very happy with it and they come with a lifetime warranty. The mangrove rod is not fast but not slow just a sweet spot that loads really well. I'm not an awesome caster but I can make quick accurate short casts or load it up and reach out there. The reel balances the rod well. Hope this helps

Fixing to order the kraken in the turquoise color to match with my axiom. Can't wait to get it.

I have the turquoise reel and it definitely turns heads. They're releasing a limited run in gold and I will def be picking one of those up when they drop.

I def have my eye on the Kraken too but honestly, I can't ignore not buying a good quality reel from a reputable brand like Orvis, Sage, Abel, Tibor, Hatch, etc. From what I've read about the Allen reels, they seem legit but for that amount of money, I could get a better known name brand and feel more comfortable about my purchase.

Does that make sense?

I am sure the Allen products are just fine but I'm a firm believer in reputable brand.
