If I am going to put out a few of these overnight, will I be required to use a gear tag?

Thanks!

If you are talking about the "yo-yo" self winding type used like a limb line, they are illegal in public water in Texas.

I found in the FAQ on TPWD site that yo-yo's are not permitted. They give no other info about why though.

As to why, it's a bit of a hmmm . The most rational reason I can think of is that if set improperly a yo-yo could pull a fish out of the water while unattended, potentially killing and wasting a fish (Which may or may not be of legal size/species to start with).

I think I'll email TPWD and see if they can elaborate a bit. I've seen others say because some people don't check the yo-yo's often enough; fish suffocate, etc...if I receive a response from them, I will post it here.

If you dig back deep enough, you might be able to find the original bill text in the legislature that added these, it might give you a "why", it's been in effect for years.
