Do sealed lead acid batteries have to be installed upright or can they be installed on their side?

Upright. They still contain liquid acid and have vent holes that will leak.

A sealed "flooded" lead acid which is not made much anymore can leak. But most sealed lead acid batteries you buy nowadays are AGMs and the acid is fully absorbed and quite spill proof.
