I use mostly 1/2 oz weight with minnows or 1/8 RR or jigs on bottom, 1/16 on top. I use these, which make it easier http://www.basspro.com/Mr-Crappie-TrollTech-Crappie-Rigs/product/10210942/

I generally use 5/8 to 3/4 oz. Depends how fast you move around. With 6-8 rods out, you need enough weight to keep the bait straight down. 1/2 oz lets the bait swing too much when you need to move side to side and lets the baits get tangled.

my bud uses a roadrunner in 1/4 oz as a sinker I think when he drifts for crappie ......
but he also uses 4 lb test and a very short rod .....

Match the sinker more to depth you are fishing and how fast you are moving more than the rod.

You can fish anything from 1/16 up to an ounce maybe more if you need.

5/8 to 3/4 are probably the most popular range weights for spider rigging.
