I've been using a Quantum Optix 20 spinning reel with a Daiwa Laguna (LAG601MFS)medium fast 6' on 10# mono (which has been breaking off recently due to abrasion i think... I'll probably have to look into different line as well)
The reel was $20 and the rod was around $30. I'm looking to upgrade either/both.
I mainly bank fish for bass and mostly use T-rig, 3/8oz jigs, small topwater frogs, small spinner baits, etc. Personal record so far is a 6#er.
Just wanted your opinion on whether to keep either my rod/reel or upgrade to something better. I'm thinking about just sticking with spinning gear for now, baitcasting gear looks expensive and complicated, and less versatile. I'd say my budget is $100-$150. Advice from the experts plz!

To be honest, that's a pretty good setup you have. I have a Daiwa Laguna baitcast rod and I love it.
The Shimano Sellus rod is pretty good. They have it at academy for $60. A longer rod would be better for topwater and cranking. I have a 6'8" and 7' rod. Abu Garcia has some pretty good spinning reels. I've heard good things about quantum and Daiwa reels also.
As far as baitcast, the Abu Garcia pro max is a pretty good reel for beginners. You can learn pretty quickly with it. I have one and comparing it to other reels, it performs better than some if the higher dollar reels, in my opinion. The pro max runs $80. But it's a pretty good reel.
It's just all about personal preference really. If you're more comfortable with spinning setups and can catch fish on it, then stay with it.

One of my favorite combos was $30 mettle reel and $30 all star classic from academy. The mettle bait cast reels are great for their money

If u want to stick with a spinning combo go to academy and get a Abu Garcia orra sx spinning reel for 99.99 then get a h20 "academy brand 6-6 1/2 foot rod for 39.99-49.99. That will give a an excellent combo with one of the best spinning reels you can buy. U can handle any fish u hook up with on that combo.

I can't find that online... is it called something different? or could you link me? Those are both products sold exclusively at Academy. If they are not available online then head to your local store. The Mettle is H20 brand and the rods are by All Star.
