I started writing this report in my deer blind on Sunday morning as I was thinking what a great weekend it had been. I was interrupted! More about that at the end. The fishing at PK right now is good. Mike Acosta and I took eleven great guys out fishing on Saturday Morning. Fishing was good and we cleaned about 150 sand bass and one striper. Fish were caught at mid lake on slabs with flies. Consistent fishing for now. I expect more striper catches as the stripers move off the lower end of the lake. Schools of fish appeared to be smaller groups. This week�s graph pic is of sand bass on the attack in shallow water.


As I am cleaning fish I remember that my seventeen year old son has gone on his first solo duck hunt with another young friend and neighbor Mark. I have a few concerns because I knew how I was at seventeen. Spencer calls shortly and reports that they have shot there limit, picked up there trash and shot gun shells and are on their way home. Congratulations to my son and Mark on their first solo outing. I guess he was paying attention all those years we hunted together. As you may notice by the pic he needs a dog! lol

After getting things ready for my next guide trip on PK I drove to Hamilton to surprise my family with an unexpected arrival at the deer lease. I went in stealthy and the look on my brothers face when I walked in the camper was priceless. I hid in the bathroom and scared my nephews girlfriend good.
Sunday morning I get to my blind early. I see to does but decide not to shoot. I am much handier with a rod & reel than with a gun. There just two far and moving too fast. I am typing my report in my phone and I see a buck and doe come in to my area. They lay down 50 yards out of site. The buck stands up after about 45 min and gives me a good sniff. Nose high in the air. We both know were each other is now.
All I can see is head and antlers as he lays back down. There is no way out. The buck cant leave without being seen. So I wait and I am getting hungry and the coffee is gone! This is a long story so I�ll get to the point. We finally use a pair of rattling antlers to get him up. It took a few try�s but he finally gets up and walks straight at me. I put a 243 round between his shoulder and neck head on. He falls. Cool!
Wait a second��.. he is back up and stills wants to fight. I shoot and graze his two front knees. Lover boy has now come to his senses and takes off running. Connor is aiming at the doe. About 50 yards more and he(the buck) remembers his girlfriend and stops to check on her. My brother knocks him down with a 270 round to the high shoulder. Cool
But wait�he is still trying to get up..lust and adrenaline have really got this big boy pumped. We ended it and the committee buck is on the ground for good. Wow what a hunt and a weekend!

Fortunately I did not have to catch bait for my guide trip.That with all the other stuff would have put me in the locker plant!

I'll have to second that fact that stripers have moved from the bottom of the lake. I went out to the free "temp" ramp on the peninsula to see what the lake looked like there and it's a forest. I hate to tear up my boat motor trying to figure our where boat lanes are. I have a map but the lake is so far down you have to subtract 15 feet or so. I assume Costello Island is now the Costello Peninsula.

When you pull off the ramp just head for the white BRA buoys. Stay with the buoys until you find your spot.Then move slow and careful out of the river channel to your spot. There is still plenty of lake out there. There is no sense griping about the low water. Not much you can do but pray and hope GOD and the BRA put it back someday.Until then Ill fish what we have. It may PK/Brazos River or PK Lake.....I fishin!

Thanks for the info Randy. I think I'll try it tomorrow since we will have light winds. Do you think it will help to trim the motor up just in case I whack a tree? I do carry a spare prop but don't relish the thought of changing one out in November lake water.

It really not that bad. Just go check it out. I have been on lake about 50 times since July with ne issues.

Thanks Randy. It will be a new experience from down at Neely slough and the dam. Even when the lake is full it's shallow up there.
