I got the news today that I'll be relocated to Dallas, TX...everything is going to happen between now and may 2014. I'm from Calgary, AB Canada, home of the Bow river and close to the majestic Canadian Rocky mountains. To resume: Trout every where all the year around.

Now...how is the fly fishing in texas? mainly bass? I read about stock programs in winter for trout...any trout fishery close by?
where to go around dallas?

any input will be really appreciated. I need some help to digest the news from my company.

The stocked trout are more like farm raised. Sort of fly-shy. Fly fishing in Texas is for all bass and pan-fish species. I even know of some carp fly anglers. The coast flats fishing is good from what I have been told, but it is 4-6 hours from Dallas. There are some cold water discharge tail race fisheries that do year-round trout stockings, but not in the metroplex. Best trout fishery i know of and closest to Dallas would be A couple of mountain- type rivers in Oklahoma 2-3 hours.

You'll need to drive up to Arkansas. Good trout fishing up there.

Broken Bow, OK is roughly 3 hour trip from Dallas. The dam flows out into the lower mountain fork river and has great trout fishing. Oklahoma is beautiful country. There is more coastline in OK than the entire state of CA.

I consider Texoma the premier lake in north texas, roughly 1 hour north of Dallas and has some of the best striper fishing in the country.

You'll love the year around fishing opportunities. Our winters are probably more like your summers.

Broken Bow OK for trout but most are stockers. I moved from CO only knowing fly fishing. Best bets in TX Laxe Texoma for Stripers on top in the summer or sinking line winter. Other than that sight fish for
Large mouth bass in the spring. Most fun on a fly rod is Lower Laguna Madre for red drum, black drum and speckled trout. But it is 4-6 hrs from Dallas. Check out Dallas Fly Fishers website good guys.

Fly fishing for bass in the spring spawn is a blast. Same for crappie. After that, you need to switch to sandbass or catfishing. Colorado is where most Texans go in the summer to get our fix of trout fishing. And Welcome to Texas!

Ohhh great guys!! Thank you for all the info. It's a good thing I will be able to fish all year around! For us is quite different, Summers are really the only time where we can fish open water, the rest of the time is just too cold! I usually go winter fishing in the few open water like the bow river, but I do it when is above 0 degrees celsius, that being said...calgary's temperature 90% of the winter is -10 to -35 celsius degrees..so we have to brave the weather!

Yes, I'll have to learn to fish for all the different species you have there, but you know what... when you are moving, you always want to compare prices and all that...so, I was reading about getting a guide for a guided trip and the prices are...buffffff lower than here, for example a full day trip in the bow river is about $550 to $600 CAD plus tips...around $700 total. I saw some guides in Oklahoma for a full day float trip (I can't remember the river) for $300 USD...

Hey guys...just another question, how the licenses work? licenses for each state? are they annual?

In another matter, I tie my own flies so....I'll need to start from scratch to learn bass flies....to make it easy, I have no clue about bass fishing or something else...I know about trout and pike.

I'm in to drive up to 6 hours if the fishing is good!

Sorry guys...too many questions...Here we mostly walk-and-wade or pontoon fishing in lakes....Looks like the best invest is to get a real boat down there?

a lot of kayakers from dfw take their yaks to the brazos since its not too far from. somewhere up there they stock a few trout during the winter in the river I believe. check out our fly fishing forum and our kayak section, think you'll find out lot's

You will need a licenses for each state. Texas licenses are annual,they come due Sept 1st of each year. A standard fishing licenses is $30, salt water and trout stamps are extra. You might as well learn how to bass fish with a rod and reel while you are here. It is very addicting and a whole lot of fun! Plenty of good guys on here from DFW that will take you out and show you the ropes.
