I moved down to the Houston area from Ft. Worth about two years ago now and have been poking around Lake Conroe a little here and there trying to find some half-way decent spots for both a boat and off the bank fishing and was wondering if anyone else has had any luck. I've caught a few up on the north end of the lake in stubblefield, but thats really been about it as far as my luck with crappie fishing has gone down here.

I've been told that the bridges on Conroe hold fish pretty good in the summer, but I have not fished it myself.

Yeah, everyone talks about that 1097 bridge for cats all the time, but I haven't heard of anyone catching any crappie off the thing. I'm sure they're there but don't want to risk pulling in the wrong fish o.O haha.

They are all grease worthy.

I have fished conroe for 20+ years and used to guide there before moving to fort worth. Here is a breakdown of Crappie movement for the year. Fall- start in the shallower Brush piles in sept around 12-15ft and move to the deeper brush and standing timber as well as 1097 bridge from around november on depending on if the water gets in the low 50's stay there till spring. Spring find fish in the shallow timber in caney and up north. As spring turns to summer with water temps climbing into the low 80 range return to the brush in 10-15ft of water to catch post spawn but do not sit on top of te fish. It works much better if you sit off to the side of the pile and cast to it with a light jig. The crappie will get very fired up and will often be within a foot or 2 of the surface and if you are on top of them they will get spooked. year round i prefer as light a jig as i can get away with. When the crappie see a bait falling slow alot of times they will eat it way before you reach your desired depth. Also this helps to determine at what depth they are feeding. Hope this helps. The bridge does hold crappie on it in the winter on those pilings. I haven't done to good on it though in the winter. I have pulled some in February and March right where it becomes rocky on the first pillars.

I have been fishing Conroe for a little over 20 years. Its been a little tougher this year I think because the drought hurt the spawns and so many fish bunched up under the 1097 bridge and were caught the last two winters. I also have not been fishing the lake as much the last two years, because of Crappie Anglers of Texas and none of their tournaments are on Conroe. This time of year I would usually fish any kind of structure in 20' or deeper. Bank fishing a marina or Stubblefield are probably good ideas. Most of the year any kind of stucture with 10' of water on top of it is good. If you have no brush piles, then pull up and down timber, trees, or bridge pilings. If you have a good fish finder, then find other people's brush piles and fish them (they are public property).

Good advice Bobby. I have not been on conroe this year yet but I have some friends with most of my best crappie GPS coordinates and have heard good things in the past 2 weeks. I do agree that it was tougher the past 2 years but WOW how they have grown. there are some giant crappie in that lake right now.
