I was surf fishing in Port A this Saturday. I was catching lots of croaker and skipjack (lady fish ) on a gold spoon with a small piece of fish bites. Anyway, I decided to hook up a lady fish onto my big rod with a redfish leader. I hooked up with something about 4.5 long. It was blue with a light colored belly. It leaped in the air one time and broke off after about two minutes. The body looked shark-like but when he leaped up, I only saw him from the belly side. What I did see of his side was blue. Anybody have an idea of what it could be?

Spinner sharks are called that because they jump and spin. There's a couple videos of them jumping over surfers on Youtube.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I've caught sharks before, mostly black tips. This one was just so blue it made me second guess what it was. Lots of people saw it leap so even if I didn't land it, I was popular for a minute or two on the beach.

Yep, sounds like a spinner. I had one jump over me once while surfing.

How big a spoon were you using? What kind of fish bites?

Doesn't sound like a spinner. Spinners are grey. Almost every species of shark will jump. Not just spinners. I've seen bulls jump out of the water.

I'm guessing it was a Finetooth. They have a strong blue color and will jump just like BTs, and Spinners.

I was using a two inch Johnson Splinter Casting Spoon in gold with a small square of shrimp fish bites on one of the hooks. Reeling in steady did nothing but if I jerked it every 3-4 spins I was hooking up on almost every cast. Like I said, the shark was on a ladyfish on a redfish leader.

Might it have been a cobia? From a distance with sunlight, I could see a jumping cobia looking kind of blue.

Well, you may say I'm crazy, but from the photos on Lost Boys website, I'm thinking it was a sandbar shark. I'm positive it had the rounded nose, much different than the blacktips I'm used to catching. The body shape looks right also. It says they are rare in the summer, but that sure does look like what jumped out of the water.

Could have been a sandabar. Here is a Finetooth that was caught last weekend in the same area. What do you think?
