I double dipped this past Tuesday. Started well before daylight at lake Whitney. I spent about 45 minutes catching shad in the dark to be on the water around 6am. Realbigreel met me and we set out to try and tempt some stripers. Unfortunately, I only had one bite that I failed to hook up. I gave it until about 8am, then loaded up and headed to the river. Gutcheck had beat me out there, but I caught up with him around noon. The fishing was a little slow, but we were catching fish. The wind had picked up and the current flow was up making it a pain to maintain position and fish. I switched to live bait and almost immediately started getting bit. I tossed up into a rock and tree infested snag and got a big swirling take. Set up on it and it owned me from the start. I could feel through the strain on the line it was tangled in the limbs so I eased off the pressure. I had to get in the water to follow the line with my hand and after some feeling around I felt the fish. Just as I got a grip on its lip the line broke! Turned out to be one of the longest bass I've caught in a long time at 24.5". We kept catching fish the rest of the day with some good size longnose gar up to 48", a few big channel cats, and some spotted bass.

I'm gonna steal Jamie's analogy to describe what it's like spending a day on the river with him: It's like being a kid again. If it's got gills and fins he's got a presentation for it that will boat it. And it doesn't take long either. Flicking a fluke into the shallows to finesse finicky bass, tossing his net while standing from his scrambler, pointing out a riffle where the spots are stacked up like sardines, you name it this guy has the river dialed in. I have yet to see him with a fly rod but I have no doubt hes deadly with it. I suspect that it wouldnt matter what body of water he were on, he'd figure it out fast. Hes just flat out the fishcatchinest dude I've ever had the pleasure of wetting a line with. He's downplaying the way he swam up into that laydown to yank that bass out of there. I remember thinking, "Damn that's WAY more committed than I am!" He then proceeds to raise up what is probably the largest river bass I'll ever see in person. It should qualify as the new C&R record for the river if he chooses to submit it. Jaw dropping stuff! A little later and he's showing me that riffle that's stacked with spots, then it's on to the gar and hes noosing a four footer in the shallows, now it's a school of big channel cats. It's kind of mind boggling how he moves from species to species with such ease. He's as generous with his knowledge as he is with his bait. There's always more where that came from. This guy is always on fish it seems and his enthusiasm for the river and all it's critters is infectious. Thanks Jamie for your generosity. I hope someday I can return the favor...

Tom, it's a real pleasure sharing the river with you. I try to let guys do their own thing unless they ask me something specific. I'm glad you let me play "guide" a little (not that you need it) and corrupt you into using some bait and messing with "trash fish!" One of the neat things about the river is the diversity of the fish and wildlife that abounds there. Watching deer, turkey, owls, etc and catching a bunch of fish while floating in clear water flowing among the bluffs...it just doesn't get much better than that.

Where on the Brazos was this, Jamie?
Incredible report man. I'd happily paddle my Outback down there. I love river trips and that's the biggest reason I got an Outback instead of a ProAngler, because it isn't too much of a burden to paddle. I've been itching to get back on a river.
Good job man, every time I see you post I know I'm about to be impressed.

Aggie, it's the middle Brazos. On days when they generate you'd have no problem with a Hobie PA. When they don't, well it gets old dragging my scrambler over the rocks I got a new crack in fact on this trip The generating has been erratic the last couple weeks.
