I am changing out 2 of the 4 toilets in the house with low-flow models. It looks easy enough even though I have never done it. The existing ones are sealed with grout at the bottom seam at the floor. Should I do the same with the replacements or is it a cosmetic only step? I would assume sealing that crack would prevent a lot of future issues down the road.

Cosmetic and tough to keep clean especially with little boys in the house.

get some DAP in a matching color, use it to seal after you bolt them down.

works much better and will be almost invisible if you smooth with a wet finger.

Update. I replaced the can last week. It took about 40 minutes start to finish including removal of the old unit. All went as planned. Thanks for the DAP tip too, HOP. I was really not looking forward to using grout.

It depends on how level the floor is. The grout might be there to hide shims or even fill in. Low spots. Don't forget to replace the Wax Ring.

You're really gonna love the low flow models. (Dripping with sarcasm)
