Evenin' Forum Folks

As you might have guessed by now, this time of year is a little slow for a die hard crappie fishermen, but never the less, some folks still need to put some meat in their freezers. With that being said, here's how we're catching them right now.

Daybreak finds us fishing piles in 8-12ft of water, with big logs being the ticket. The best bites are coming on minnows, fished very slowly. If the angler is moving their jig quick enough to cause any slack in their line, they are moving much to fast. I haven't fished a jig in the last two weeks, because they just aren't responding to them right now. I like to jig fish more than anything, but I have to do what the fish tell me to do.

As mid morning rolls around, I'm backing off to 12-15ft of water and presenting my minnow to the fish in the same manner. SLOW. I have my finger on the line, and am watching the line beneath the end of my pole very attentively. Most of the strikes we're getting right now are on the fall, or being pushed up.

Towards late morning, I'm looking for a piece of standing timber. As many of you who have fished Cedar Creek know, there isn't a lot of main lake timber. The hand full of trees that are on the main lake though, are very productive this time of year. I like to have my customers start fishing around 8 ft, and finish up somewhere around 15ft. Basically, we're catching the fish on top first, and working our way down.

If you are needing to increase your brushpile count, or perhaps work on your boat control, now is a good time to do it. The fishing is tough, which gives the fishermen plenty of reason to look for new cover just in time for fall. The wind is very light on most days, making it much easier to practice using a trolling motor. Hope this helps, ya'll!

Water Temp: 87
Water Depth: 5 feet low
Boat Ramp Status: The Log Cabin boat ramp is the only one I feel safe using right now.

Thanks for a great report Lane! I just got home a few minutes ago after being away the past 8 days so your current info is much appreciate. I hope to get out here in the next day or two to verify what you are seeing but, I'm sure you are right as gold, as always. Don't even waste your time on my house, I have 'do not occupy' signs out to prepare for fall arrivals.
