What is the best was to tell how deep you are fishing when you are fishing off the bank??

Get one of those portable fish finders that has the transducer you throw out on a fishing pole.

Use a slipcork, cast it out if the slipcork is layed on its side it's still on bottom. Keep adjusting a couple foot or so and recast until it stands up. Then you can just measure how much line is out from your slipknot.

Cast a 1oz weight out an count the seconds it takes from splash down till it hits bottom, how ever many seconds is approx. how deep it is. Not scientifically proven but hasn't failed me yet
