New to crappie fishing. Just bought a combo. I'd like to know what you guys recommend for line as far as pound test and type of line. Thanks for your help.

Hey bud I would recommend 8 to 12lb braided line. If you are fishing clear water I would suggest a 10lb swivel with 6 to 10lb mono leader.

Yes, you can bend your hook straight or sometimes pull up a piece of brush and not lose your jig. We(crappie folks) seem to be divided into three major camps; braided line, mono and floro. IMHO floro is great stuff but kinda overkill for the water clarity I fish. But it's great stuff and if I weren't such a cheapskate I'd use it. If you don't mind breaking off every now and then use mono. If you like to yank on the brush and keep your jig use the braid. Of course there are also those rebels who tie mono or floro to the braid using a leader. This seems to mostly have to do with "line shy" fish. As my eyesight declines I foresee the need to use bright colored line with a clear leader to help me detect subtle line movements and just plain see the line better. Crappie aren't big fighters and don't make long drag screaming runs so fight is not a factor. The sink rate and feel of the jig is more important especially if you are using a 1/32 oz jig head or lighter. Light jig means slow fall and less sensitivity on larger diameter braid or mono. I'm using an 8# braid in a 1# diameter and I can feel the last dying gasp of the minnow on a hook or the slightest peck of a brim on the jig. But I use 4# clear/blue Stren 90% of the time. Good luck! Choose the line that you like best and you"ll catch em.

Is there an advantage to using braided line? You can feel alot more with braid - whether brush or fish. You'll also have a little bit better chance of straightening your hook when you get hung up. I like the sensitivity the most, it's definitely better when it comes to that over mono.

ok. as a leader what should I use flouro or mono? Either or. I have some spools that didn't completely empty while spooling bass reels with flour, so I use that for leaders. Can't go wrong with 12# Bonehead Braid. Ultimate in sensitivity & strength. And colored lines make the light pick-up bites easy to detect.

Straight 6lb fluoro would be a temptation if I were fishing Falcon. However if you wanted to bring in the wayward big bass hitting your jig maybe the lighter braid with a 10lb fluoro leader. Heavier line would be better too if you were minnow fishing... less headaches with the line wrapping up around the bait etc.

I'm a big fan of the hi-vis yellow braid. I like to be able to see the fish bite and it's super sensitive

We use braid when fishing double minnow rigs so we can hopefully get the hook free without breaking off. But, for our jigging poles we use Lake Fork's Flourotex 10 lb line. I'm not sure how this is made, but it is the strongest 10 lb line we've ever used. The memory is almost non-existent. If you get this hooked up in brush or a tree, it's almost impossible to break off! It comes in clear and flourescent orange and in 6,8 and 10 lb test.

I have been sitting here for 20 minutes trying to figure out how to obtain Lake Fork Flourotex line and some Bonehead braid. It seems that their website is the only place to get them but LF Flourotex says out of stock and the Bonehead website will not allow a color option and the add to cart button will not work. Someone please help me obtain these products. Thanks in advance.

For Bonehead braid, PM Bonehead Tackle about 4 posts up. I have some orange, and looks like good line. I finally put some on one of my reels, but was windy and didn't go. Going through withdrawls, haven't beed fishing in a month. Took a vacation day thursday to go.
